ROWAN COUNTY, NC WILL - BRITTAIN, JOSEPH - 1774 File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Ann Broadbent Goscote@aol.com Rowan Co, NC Will Book A pg. 183 August Court 1774 Will of JOSEPH BRITTAIN In the name of God Amen, I JOSEPH BRITTAIN of Rowan County, in the province of North Carolina being sick and weak of body but of sound and disposing mind and memory, Do make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner following:As for my Estate where as it hath pleased God to bless me with, I give and bequeath in manner following, First, It is my desire that all my just Debts be duly satisfied and paid. Item: I give and bequeath unto my eldest Daughter, MARY ELROD, one cow and calf and her increase and one feather bed to her and her heirs forever. Item: I give and bequeath unto my eldest son, JAMES BRITTAIN, one improvement joining to the place I now live on. Also five pounds out of the Estate to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter PHOEBE BRITTAIN one featherbead and two cows and calves and one yearling steer also one pewter Dish and basin and three plates to her and her heirs forever. Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving wife JEMIMA BRITTAIN my land and Improvement that I now live on, also all my plantation Tools and House furniture the children excepted one bay mare and side Saddle also one bay horse called Jack, one young bay Stallion, six cows and calves to possess as long a she continues her natural life or widow hood for her and her Childrens use. My will and pleasure is that after my wife’s decease or marriage, that the above mentioned articles be sold and equally divided between my six youngest children. My will and desire is that my Tract of Land lying and being in Orange County in North Carolina on halfway Creek of Little River, be sold and equally divided between my six youngest children. Item: I give and bequeath unto PHILLIP, WILLIAM, JOSEPH, BENJAMIN, AARON, and SAMUEL all the rest of my Estate to be Equally divided and each of them to have their part as they come of age to them and their heirs forever. My desire is that my six youngest Boys have their Education out of their own part of the Estate. I desire that GEORGE SMITH that crops with me now shall have his part of the crop according to Bargain and I appoint my loving wife, JEMIMA BRITTAIN, ROBERT BRANK and JOHN HARDIN my Executors of this my last will and Testament, hereby revoking all the other Wills in Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the twenty second day of August in the year of our Lord 1773.
