Joseph Lowrance - 1779 - Rowan County, NC - Wills Submitted for use in the USGenWeb Project Archives by Twylla Teer edteer@bellsouth.net WILL OF JOSEPH LOWRANCE: "IN the name of God Amen: I Joseph Lowrance of Rowan County in the Province of North Carolina, Being thro the abundant goodnefs of God, of sound and perfect understanding and memory. Calling to mind my mortallity and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to dye, I'd therefore (this Sixth Day of Auguft in the Year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Seventy Six) make and Conftitute this my Last will and testament, in manner and form following; and firft I moft humbly Bequeath my Soul to God my Maker befeeching his gracious acceptance of it thro the allfificient merrit and meditation of Jefus Christ my Lord and Redeemer; and my Body to the Earth from whence it came; in that hope of a joyfull Refurection in and thro the merrit and power of him who is the awakener of the dead; and as to my worldly Estate; I will and pofitively order that all my Lawfull Debts be juftly paid. And I do give and bequeath to my beloved and only son John; my property of Land Lying between the forks of Cataba River on lylfes Creek, and if he deceas before he of age; then said land to become the property of my well beloved and only Daughter Elizabeth; and bequeath to my honoured father John Lowrance, my Negro wench named Coombo (sic??), he paving the sum of Eighty five pounds prock money of North Carolina to my Executors; the said money to be by my Executors put on intereft till my children be of age. then one third given to my son John and two thirds to my daughter Elizabeth. I alfo give and bequeath to my son John my Silver Sleafbuttons and plated shoe buckels; and I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth the small Silver Sliafbuttons & Silver Shoe buckels which was my beloved wifes. I alfo give and bequeath to my son John my small trunk; also to my daughter Elizabeth her mothers small trunk, which trunks to be in the care of my Brother Abraham and sister Elizabeth, till the children be of age. I alfo give and bequeath unto Martha Burnet the daughter of Charles Burnet deceased, all her own wearing clothes given to her by me or my wife before her death, alfo as as much of my Cotten and Flax as will make her one bedtickboulfter, pillow; pillow Cafes and two Sheets, alfo one Cow and Calf and yearling hifer at her Choice and I also bequeath unto Daniel Hunt the Eldest son of my sister Margaret Hunt one black yearling horse coult; and I give and bequeath to my beloved Brother Abraham one black mear the dame of said black coult; And I give and bequeath to my beloved Brother Andrew my mattock and as much of my iron and steel; of to be suficient to lay said mattock. The remainder of my moavable Estate; I order to sould; by the authority I put into the hands; of my Executors, at Public vandue, and the money Equally Divided to my two children; and put on intereft; which intereft; with that of the Negro wench and the rent of my plantation to be for the mantainance and schooling of my two children; my daughter I defire shall be learn't to read write and Cypher so that she may be Capable of book keeping, and likewife that she be put to my sifter Catherine or elfewhere to be learnt the trade my sifter Catherine has. And my son John I defire should ( if his part of my moaveable Estate be sufficient for it) be school'd or learn't; as far as may be nefsecarry to fit him for the preaching of the Gofpel. And I do make Conftitute and appoint my well beloved Brothers, John and Abraham Lowrances, to be my whole and Sole Executors of this my laft will and teftament Disallowing; Disannulling and making void, all other will or wills; by me heretofore made; Ratifying and Confirming this and only this my Last will and testament. Providing alfo that in the Cafe one or boath the above named Executors, should deceafe before before the Execution of thefe prefents, that then one or both my other other Brothers, namely; Andrew and Jacob, be and are hereby appointed to Execute in the room and steat of the above. In witnefs whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Sixth Day of Auguft 1776." Signed Seated and Delivered s/ Joseph Lowrance By the Teftator as and for his laft will and teftament in the prefence of us who are prefent at the Signing and Sealing hereof. s/ Andrew Lowrance s/ Elizabeth Lowrance s/ George Niblackee A CODICIL WAS ADDED LATER TO THE ABOVE WILL: Be it Remembered that on the twelveth Day of November one thousand seven hundred and seventy Eight that Joseph Lowrance of Rowan County being seazed with A violent fit of sicknefs; sent for us the subcrribers And tould us that he apprehended he could not live but a very short time and signified he had made a Former will and testament; but that it was his will and defire to make the following alteration: "TO WIT_____ "It is my will and Defire and I do ordain and order that this place I now live on shall be Kept up for My son John in stead of the other I willed to him and the other to be sould and two thirds of the money o/o [thereof] be my sons the other parte to be my Daughters. I Likewise order that my Negro wench be sould at public vandue and the coult I wild to Daniel Hunt as for Martha Burnet She hath Gotten all her part that I willd to her, Except her Cattle they are with me yet, which she is to have____ and as for my Wife I will and give unto her the thirds of my Moeable Estate.
