copied into the court record from the original will at the time of
probate. The clerk assumed the name Ratledge was Rutledge and so wrote it
that way.
November Sesson 1813 Will BK G. pg. 291-292
I James Rutledge Snr. of Rowan Conty and State of North Carolina being
weak of body but of perfect ememory, thought proper to make constitute
and appoint this my last will and Testament in manner following that is
to say -
First I will that after my descease my Body be decently buried my funeral
Charges paid and all my Just debts legally dishcharged.
Secondly I will unto my Son Daniel Rutledge one Negro man named Samuel to
his use and behoof.
Thirdly I will unto my Daughter Mariam Roberson wife of Joseph Roberson
Ten Shillings Current Lawfull Money of the State aforesaid.
Fourthly I will unto my Daughter Elizabeth Forcum deceased wife of Thomas
Forcum Ten Shillings Current lawfull Money as aforesaid.
Fifthly I willunto my Daughter Ruth Parker wife of Reubin Parker one Cow
and Calf Called White Back.
Sixthly I will unto my Daughter Matilda Gatton wife of Benjamin Gatton
one Hors Blast.
Seventhly I will unto my beloved wife Ruth Rutledge my Dwelling
Plantation with all appurtenances thereto belonging with one Negro man
named Stepney and all my moveable Estate during her widowhood or lie to
her use but not to sell or dispose of any of Said Property further than
through the Support of herself or her family, and after her Decease or
day of Marriage I will the above Tract of land unto my son James Rutledge
and his Heirs forever with the Said Negro man Stepney as aforesaid and
all the Moveable Estate aforementioned.
And lastly I appoint my son Daniel Rutledge and my wife Ruth Rutledge
whole and Sole Executor of my Estate aforementioned.
Whereunto I have set my name and fixed my seal this eighth day of
September in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Nine.
