I J.P. KURFEES of the County of Davie and State of N. Carolina being of sound 
mind and memory, do make publish and declare this to be my last Will and 
Testament to Wit:

All my just debts and funeral expenses shall be first fully paid.
I give devise and bequeath all the rest residue and remainder of my estate, 
both real and personal to my beloved wife MARY KURFEES to have to hold to her 
my said wife and at her death the said estate shall be equally distributed 
among my legal heirs except that J.F. KURFEES my lawful heir shall receive $50 
fifty dollars over an equal part with the rest of my lawful heirs.
I nominate and appoint my son JESSE LEE KURFEES to be the Executor of this my 
last Will and Testament, without bond.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal This 27th day of 
December 1897.

State of North Carolina, Davie County {SS Justice Superior Court
A paper writing to be the last Will and Testament of J.P. KURFEES deceased, is 
exhibited before me, the undersigned Clerk of the Superior Court for said 
County, by JESSE LEE KURFEES the Executor therein mentioned, and the due 
execution of thereof by the said J.P. KURFEES is proven by this Oath and 
examination of P. TURNER and B.F. STONESTREET the subscribing witnesses 
thereto who being duly sworn both dispose and say, and each for himself 
disposith and saith that he is a subscribing witness to the paper writing now 
shown him purporting to be the last Will and Testament of J.P. KURFEES, that 
the said J.P. KURFEES in the presence of this deponent, subscribed his name at 
the end of said paper – writing now shown as aforesaid and which bears date of 
the 27th day of Dec 1897.
And the deponent Further saith that the said J.P. KURFEES the testator 
aforesaid did at the time of subscribing his name aforesaid declare the said 
paper writing so subscribed by him and exhibited to be his Last Will and 
Testament and this deponent did thereupon subscribe his name at the end of 
said as an attesting witness thereto and at the ----- and in the presence of 
the said testator.  And this deponent further saith that at the said time when 
the said when the said testator subscribed his name to the said last Will as 
aforesaid and at the time of deponent’s subscribing his name as an attesting 
witness thereto as aforesaid the said J.P. KURFEES was of sound mind and 
memory, of age to execute a Will, and was not under any restraint to the 
Knowledge, information or belief of this deponent:  And further these 
deponents say not.

Additional Comments:
John Peter Kurfees (b. Jan 24, 1826; d. June 16, 1898), son of Caleb F. 
Kurfees and Catherine Freeze – and husband of Mary Catherine Roberts (daughter 
of Enoch Roberts and Mary “Polly” Rowzee/Rousey).  J.P. Kurfees and Mary 
Roberts married in Davie County, North Carolina on June 15, 1852.  They had 
eleven children:  Sarah Ann “Sallie” Kurfees Green; Mary Catherine “Cassie” 
Kurfees Stonestreet; Marshall Clement Kurfees; Martin Jefferson Kurfees (died 
at age 2); Barbara Jane Kurfees (died at age 9); James Franklin Kurfees; John 
Wesley Kurfees; Jesse Lee Kurfees; Washington Nealy Neal Kurfees; Marion 
Francis McGarvey Kurfees; and one unnamed child died in infancy.
