For the convenience of my family and for the purpose of providing in part for the payment of my debts, I direct that all the negroes on my plantation with the stock of any description and all my household and kitchen furniture, my waggins, cart, and farming utensils be kept together and my plantation worked to the best advantage for such time after my decease that two crops can be made; and my family, including my sister Mary Brian to live together as they have heretofore done, until my said crops can be made and got in; and all of the said crops that can be spared after the maintenance of my family, I direct to be applied to the payment of my debts... At the end of the time when the crops aforesaid can be got in and sold, I give to my son William Long one good bed and furniture and bedstead, ten head of cattle, two work horses and the following negro slaves, to wit, Sam, Austin, Mathew, Nelson, Charlotte, her child Cyrus and such increase as she may hereafter have; also old Lu wife of Sam, Isam son of Sarah, and Julius, child of Sue. I also give to my said son William all the lands lying within the following boundaries to wit: beginning in the Salem road on the north side of the Yadkin River at the land which I have by this my will given to my son James for the Ferry Landing, thence with the Salem Road to Beards Line, formerly Adams line, near the end of a crop way in a hollow, thence with my line a westerly course to a dogwood corner on the meadows branch, thence to Pearson, formerly Chambers line, and with his line crossing ---- Branch to a black oak, Coats Corner, thence down my original line which is also Coats line to the river, thence down the river to the lands given to my son James for the Ferry Landing and with the northern boundary of said land to the beginning in the Salem Road, but this devise is not to include any part of the --- --- --- tract which I own lying on the western side of the said road. If it should become necessary for the payment of my debts that the tract of land on which my son John has resided at the town ferry be sold, I authorize my executor to make such sale; but if such sale be not necessary I give the said tract of land including all the lands I own adjoining on both sides of the river, to my son Alexander Long; and in that event, he is to pay to my executor one half being seven hundred and fifty dollars $750 of the debt agreed to be paid Dr. Beckwith for the house and lot purchase of him in Salisbury, and to make such payment within two years after my executor shall have paid the same: and I direct my executor to pay what remains due of the debts contracted for and on account of the purchase of the said house and lot from Dr. Beckwith as aforesaid whether due to the bank or to Dr. Beckwith and to wait for repayment of the $750 aforesaid and if the said land be sold for payment of my debts, then my son Alexander is not to be called upon to pay any part of the said money; but if the sale of the said lands be not necessary for the payment of my debts, I request and direct my son Alexander to take care of, clothe, and maintain my son John Long; and if a sale of said lands becomes necessary for the payment of my debts, I request and direct my son James to take care of, clothe and maintain my son John and in that event, I give to my son James whatever sum may remain of the purchase money of said land after the payment of my debts. I also give to my son Alexander the negro slaves which I have heretofore put into his possession, to wit Isam, Sal and her children named Nanny and Harry, Silvy and her child, and I also give to him in addition a negro boy named Tarquill. I release to him all demands of any description, but he is to make no charge against my estate for any services rendered in my life time. I give to my son James Iredell Long all the lands included within the following boundaries, to wit: beginning on the river bank on the south side of the Yadkin River at two black oaks above the mouth of Grants Creek, my original corner, thence to a hickory in a field called Brown's field near the head of a bog, thence to a stopping white oak on the north bank of Grants Creek, thence up the creek to the mouth of the Big Branch, then to two white oaks, between which passes the road leading from my dwelling house to the mill on Grants Creek, thence from the left hand white oak, a straight line to a port oak in Swink's old Line the same being afterwards Frohock's and --- my corner, thence with William Smiths and my own, formerly Swink's line to a --- --- ditch in my low ground field, the same being Smith's and my corner, thence with said Smith's line to Beards line at a Spanish oak thence with Beards line and my line to a port oak in a flat near my pasture fence; thence my line as called for in my deeds, passing through John Beards smoke house and garden to the river bank in a sink hold, thence up the river to the beginning. I also give to my son James my ferry across the Yadkin River and ferry boats with the tackling, and as much land on the north side of the river as may be here and hereafter necessary for the ferry landing. I also give to my son James the following negro slaves to wit: Abb and his wife Patty, Amos, Anthony and his wife Peggy and her children Eliza, Nancy, and Charnen, also Leonard, Jordan, Peter, ---, Daniel, blacksmith; Riah daughter of Sue and her child Henry, also Jackson and March. I also give to my son James my old negroes, Titus and his wife Hagen, Old Isaac, Old Jim, Old Phil, Old Judy and America, hoping he will take care of them in their old age. I give to my son Richard Walter Long all the residue of the lands I own on the south side of the Yadkin River and on both sides of Grants Crick, adjoining the lands devised to my son James and including my mill on Grants Crick, except twenty nine acres or thereabouts of the lands which I purchased at the sale of the real estate of Alexander Frohock, deceased, which sale was made by the clerk and master in equity for Rowan County; and these twenty nine acres or thereabouts from a part of a tract adjoining the lands of William Smith, John Smith, (---) and Thomas Chambers; a plat of these twenty nine acres is in my desk and these twenty nine acres as described in the laid plat, I give my son in law Michael Brown; and I request the clerk and master aforesaid and in the --- of the court to make and --- to said Michael Brown and also to make a deed for the residue of the lands that I purchased at the sale aforesaid to my son Richard. I also give to my son Richard the following negroes to wit: Harry, Jack, Allen, Alfred, Epps, Anderson, Mille and her child Isaac, Sithe, daughter of Sue, Emma and Susan children of Riah, Warrick. I also give to my son Richard a good bed and furniture and bedstead, two good work horses and the young mare which I have heretofore given to him. I direct that the profits of the mill on Grants Crick and of the Ferry across the Yadkin be equally divided between my sons James and Richard, and that the expenses of keeping and repairing said mill and keeping said ferry including the cost of necessary boats and tackles be paid in equal portions to the said James and Richard. I give to my sons James and Richard and the survivors of them and the --- and Administrators of the survivors of them, the following Negro slaves, to wit, Jim --- and his wife Lucy, her youngest child named Vincent and all her future increase in trust for my daughter Nancy M. Kingsburg during her life and then in trust for her children living at the time of her death. I give to my daughter Maria Brown in addition to those which I have heretofore given to her husband, the following negroes, to wit: Amie and her child Matilda with such increase either of them may hereafter have. I also give to her Jenny, daughter of Sarah, and Judy, child of Lucy, with their future increase. I give to my daughter Rebecca H. Yarborough, the following negroes, to wit: Patience and her child Nancy, Mary, Sarah, Absolam, and Dan. I give to my daughters Harriet Brown and Caroline Broughton all the lands that I own within the following boundaries, to wit beginning in the Salem Road at the land given to my son James for a ferry landing on the North side of the Yadkin River, thence down the said river to Moses A. Locke's line, thence with his lines to the corner of a tract of land belonging to me called the Wooten tract, thence with Locke's line with the northern boundary of the said Wooten tract to John Adams corner, thence with said Adams lines to a corner of a tract of 172 acres conveyed by me to Tillman Blades and by him reconveyed to me, thence a north west course to the Salem road, thence down the said road to the beginning. I give to my daughter Harriett Brown the following negro slaves, to wit: Rachel and her children, Patty, Joseph, Patrick, Albert, Willie, and Almeira, child of Sue; also two good beds and furniture and one of my mahogany bedsteads. I give to my daughter Caroline Broughton the following negroes, to wit: Polly and her children Anthony, --- Eliza and Mary, also a negro girl named Dilcy and a boy named Charles, a child of Rachael. In case either of my daughters Harriet Brown or Caroline Broughton should die before she arrives to the age of twenty one years or marries, the property both real and personal given to her shall go to the survivor, and if both shall die before arriving to the age of twenty one years or marriage, and lands given to them shall be divided between my sons James and Richard; and the personal estate given to them shall be divided equally between my children James, Richard and Maria, except two negro girls, the increase of some of the female negroes given to them between the ages of six and ten years, and then I in that event, give to Susan and Sarah Frohock, the two youngest daughters of Betsy Frohock, and if either of them die before arriving at twenty one years of age or marriage, the said two negro girls shall go to the survivor; and if they both die before arriving to the age of twenty one years or marriage, the said negro girls with their increase shall be equally divided between Polly and Betsy Frohock, two other daughters of Betsy Frohock. All the negroes given to my sons James and Richard, and to my daughters Harriet Brown and Caroline Broughton, are to be kept together in my plantation and to be under the management of my son James, and worked for his benefit, until my son Richard shall arrive to the age of twenty one years, except the miller Jack who is to remain at the mill and when my son Richard shall arrive to the age of 21 years he is to take into his possession the property real and personal which I have given to him; and the negroes given to my daughters Harriet Brown and Caroline Broughton, and their beds and furniture to be taken possession of by them respectively upon their arrival to the age of twenty one years or marriage, and my son James is not to be accountable to them for the services of their negroes in the meantime, but he is charged with their maintenance, clothing, and education; and he shall also have the use of the lands given to my son Richard until he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years, including the profits of the mill, and he is not to be accountable to either aforesaid children for the use of their lands, but he is charged with the maintenance, clothing and education of my son Richard, as well as of my said daughters; and if any repairs to the mill be necessary in the meantime, one --- of the cost thereof is to be paid by Richard at his arrival to full age; at which time he is to take possession of his lands, negroes, houses, bed and furniture and be entitled to a --- of the profit of the mill and ferry thereafter to accrue. I give to my son James all my plantation tools, waggons, carts, oxen, horses and cattle (except as aforesaid), hogs and sheep, my cotton gin with its fixaments and all my household and kitchen furniture except the articles herein before disposed of. I direct my son James to build within two years after my decease, if I should not live to build the home myself, a comfortable house with the necessary outhouses for the accommodation of my daughter Betsy Frohock and her family. The site for these houses will be selected by him and my said daughter, on the lands which I have given to him and until such houses can be got in readiness I wish my said daughter can be got in readiness I wish my said daughter and her family to live in the home wherein my son John has lived at the lower Ferry and to have the use of the said house and such outhouses as may be necessary, the garden and so much of the plantation as she can cultivate with the hands she has; and it is my wish and I direct that after she remove to the house which my son James is to build for her on his land, that she has the use of so much of the cleared land belonging to my son James as she can cultivate with the hands she has, and as she has a large family and may stand in need of assistance for her support and maintenance, I direct my sons James and Richard to give her such assistance. I release to my said daughter Betsy Frohock the debt which she owes to me for monies paid for articles purchased by her at the sale of her husbands estate by his administrators and any other demands which I have against her. I wish my sister Mary Brian to be comfortably provided for so long as she will continue to live with either of my sons James or Richard and I request and charge them to furnish to her such provisions not in the least doubting that they will take pleasure in so doing. And as a further provision for paying my debts, I direct that all the lands I now own on the right hand side of the Salem Road on the north side of the river, adjoining the lands devised to my two daughters Harriet Brown and Caroline Broughton, and all the lands I own on the left hand side of said road adjoining the lands given to my son William and also a tract of one hundred and --- acres on the --- adjoining --- Pearsons and John --- lines on the left hand side of said road to be sold by my executor. I give to my son James, after payment of my debt, all the residue of my estate. I nominate and appoint my son James, executor of this my last will and revoke all other wills by me made. In witness whereof I, Alexander Long, have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 23 day of October AD 1824. Witnesses: William Chapman, A. D. Murphey, Elizabeth Torrence, Thomas A. Frohock.
