In the Name of God amen, I William Ledford of the State of North Carolina and Rowan County Being very sick and week in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God Calling unto mind the mortality of my body and Knowing that it is appointed for all men to once to die do make and ordain this my Last Will And testament that is to say principally and First of all I give and Recommend my soul into The hand of almighty God that gave it and my Body I Recommend to the earth to be buried in a Decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors Nothing doubting but at the general Resurrection I shall Receive the same again by the Mighty power of God and as touching such Worldly estate Wherewith it has pleased God to Bless me in this Life I give demise and dispose of The same in the following manner and form – First I give and bequeath to Elizabeth my Dearly beloved Wife one Negro gairl named Juda one sorrel mare and [words crossed through] Two small feather beds and bed[d]ing and one Hundred pounds to be Raised and Levied out of My estate and her saddle and also I give to my Daughter Sary Spoolman twenty five pounds to be Raised and Levied out of my estate and I give and Bequeath to my son John Ledford one part or parsel of Land Lying on both sides of the Ready branch joining A Line spesifyde [specified] in a bond I give to Jacob Tice and Joining John McCurrys Line and John Andersons Line to Run from said Ready branch east twenty Rods Alongst said Line spasifyd [specified] in A bond I give to Jacob Tice then Run[n]ing a Strate [straight] Line between my son John Ledford and my son Squire Ledford I give and bequeath to my Daughter Phebe Simmons one part of or Parsel of Land Lying Joining Phillip Klinards (?) Line and James Ross Line and Jacob Tices Line. I give and bequeath to My Son Squire Ledford one part or parsel of Land joining Phillip Klinarts Line and a Line spasifyd [specified] in a bond I gave to Jacob Tice and the dividing Line between my son John Ledford and my son Squire Ledford and also I give and bequeath to my Son John Ledford & my son Thomas Ledford & my son William Ledford & my son Squire Ledford and my daughter Lydia Robins [daughter Sary Spoolman crossed through] My daughter Martha Teague my daughter Ann Davis my daughter Rebekah Hinkle my daughter Elizabeth McCurry my daughter Phebe Simmons I give and bequeath To each and singguler [singular] of them my Negros Named Lun, Clark, David, Ann, Ealey [Baby in recorded copy], del [Del in recorded copy] together with all the Rest of my Hole [whole] estate of Moveables to be equally divided amoung My Sons and daughters above mentioned and [“divided” crossed through] after equilly divided then my Daughter Lydia Robins, my daughter Martha Teague, My daughter Rebekah Hinkle [Hindle in recorded copy] my daughter Elizabeth McCurry my son William Ledford all there [their] Names Above Mentioned for each and every one of them to pay twenty five pounds apiece out of there [their] parts Which Will amount to one hundred and twenty five Pounds to be paid to my son John Ledford [words crossed out] When Raised ["raised" crossed out] this Sum of my Mon[e]y is Raised and taken out of there [their] parts above mentioned then My son John Ledford to pay twenty pounds to my son Squire Ledford and twenty pounds to my daughter Phebe Simmons and Ten pounds to my daughter in Law Grizzalah Ledford the said Negro garil [girl] I Left to Elizzabeth Ledford my Wife Named Juda at her Marr[i]age to or deceas[e] to be equally divided [“equally divided” crossed through] sold and equally divided Between my son John Ledford my son Squire Ledford and my daughter Phebe Simons. And Elizzabeth Ledford my Wife I give the dres[s]er and all the dishes on it and two Little pots one Du[t]ch oven one pot Rack and the corn containing the hemp ground one Little bay Maer [mare] called hernd And the Linnen and two hogs John Ledford my son I leave Executor Whom I Likewise Constitute mak[e] and ordain the sole execurtrix [executor] of My Last Will and testament all and Singular Lands Negroes goods and Cattles by them freelly to Be possessed and enjoyed and I do hereby utterly disallow Revoke and disannul all and every other former testaments Wills Legacies bequests and executors by me in any Ways before Named Willed and bequeathed Ratifying And confirming this and No other to be my Last Will and testament in Witness Whereof I have Hereunto set my hand seal this 2d day of June in the year of our Lord 1796. The recorded copy is not strictly verbatim with the original. William Ledford resided in that part of Rowan County, NC (1753) which subsequently became Davidson County, NC (1822). He is buried in Abbott’s Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Wallburg, Davidson County, NC.
