Public Library Written: January 7, 1766 Because, by reason of sickliness and waning bodily strength, I cannot know how near may be the approach of my holy hour, I will put the following items on paper, by which my last will can be seen. Firstly.-I have bought from the beloved Br. Nathanael Seidel his lot of 2000 acres on the Dorothea, or Barkers Cabin, for two hundred and eighty, say 280: Pennsylvania currency: and before I left Pennsylvania I paid it to Br. Eberhart in Lititz, for Sr. Nathanael, one hundred and five pounds in cash, and two bonds, one for one hundred and the other for 75 pounds: as the remaining and final payment on the land, on the following conditions:-that if the aforesaid land pleased me I should receive a proper deed for it, differing from the other deeds only in the provision that I nor my heirs should have power to sell it without the approval of the Brethren and that 5 pounds should be paid annually as Quit Rent. I also placed into his hands the other bonds which I own. There are four of these, three for 75 pounds each, and one for 60"from these the 5 children who have received no land are to have their share, that is to say: 1st, my daughter Elissabeth Rank, 46 lbs 2nd, Fridirich Leinbach, my son in Lititz, L46 3rd, my daughter Maria Barbara, also in Lititz, L46 and to the two daughters still with us each L46 The remainder shall all be in the hands of the mother and also the interest from the two youngest children, from which they are to be supported. The division can be made as soon as the Brothren in Bethlehem have received the money from the aforementioned bonds and the Brothren here in Carolina have paid the money to my heirs. The mother I set in my place, with sole authority to divide the cattle and household goods and the like according to her judgement. And I, as father, lay it upon the hearts of all the children, as long as they count themselves a part of this household, to render all obedience and respect to the mother, and therefore this shall be and remain the most important thing. The mother has full power to have her home with the younger children, and has the right to claim all that she needs, for the rest of her life, from whichever child shall carry on the housekeeping. And because this is my firm desire and will I set my hand and seal as can be seen. Additional Comments: Will was originally in German.
