1775 Will Text

The will reads:

        June 9th , 1775: In the name of God Amen! I, Lorentz Lingel of
Rowan County and Province of North Carolina am ill and weak of body,
but of sound mind and memory, thank God, he who has only shown me
my mortality and I therefore make this my last will and testament in the
following manner and way:

         First I recommend my soul in the hands of the Almighty God, who
has put it into my body, my body I recommend to have buried in the
earth, after a Christian burial as seen fit by my executors. What
concerns my worldly goods, with which God has blessed me during my
lifetime, I will handle, distribute and give in the following manner.

          First I give my dearly beloved wife, Eva Catharina, the third part
of all my moveable goods and the place in the house, where I now live,
until Franz (Frank) gets to be of age. My dear son Casper I will give
fifty Pounds, proclaimed money, which he id to receive from my estate,
and the said money is to be his inheritance, and nothing more. My dear
son Conrad I will give 220 acres of land, which I bought of Henrich
Rau for him and his heirs, but he is to pay L60, fifty to his sister
Catharina and that, in three installments, the first in the year 1783, he is
to pay L16 and thirteen shillings and four cents and so much every year
until L50 are paid, the remaining L10 he is to pay to the estate, when
Jacob is of age and without interest, and my executors are not to make
him a deed for the said land until the money is paid. My dear son
Wendell and my dear son Antonius I will give the Mittel place where the
church is on, each of them half of it, to Wendell the lower half and to
Antonius the upper half, each of them is to pay L50 when my youngest
son is of age, and that in three installments, the first in the year 1778,
each installment is to be L16, 13 shilling and four cents and so much
every year until the money is paid, and my executors are not to make
him a deed for the said land until the money is paid.

    My dear son Franz I give 100 acres of the Royal land, that which I
have received from the King, further it is my will that when
the…..opens up my executors will clear for him 150 acres, where I live,
and the expenses are to be taken from the estate, and the deed shall be
made out to him and his heirs and if the house needs a new roof again,
then the expenses should be taken from the estate. For my youngest son
Jacob it is my will, above all, that he shall have L100 from my estate,
and if my executors take up some pieces of land, then it is to be paid for
out of his own money. My dear daughter Catharina, she is to have L50
from my estate as her inheritance, the money, which her brother Conrad
is to pay her, as I said above. To my daughter Elisabetha, I give L50
from my estate, out of the money Wendell is to pay. To my dear
daughter Anna Maria, I give L50, namely the L50 which my son
Antonius is to pay my estate. Further it is my sincerest will that if all
above money is paid, to my dear adult children, and ….Further it is my
sincerest will that my dear wife Eva Catharina has the use of the beds
for the children, as long until every one of them lives at his own place,
then they are to be sold as well as other goods, and my dear wife
remains a widow then she is to have her widows seat in the house, as
long as she lives, and when my son Franz comes of age, and my wife is
still a widow or still alive, then he is to give her annually as much as she
needs for her food, as she needs which is to be done by two or three
neighbors. Further it is my will  if one of my children is to die without
heirs then his inheritance is to be divided equally, among his brothers
and sisters. Further it is my sincerest will, that I may choose my good
and true friends Wendell Miller and Johannes Lippert as my executors,
for this my last will and testament and I declare all other will and
testaments void, and I confirm this my last will and testament and no
other, I have placed my signature and seal on this record, on the 9th day
of June, one thousand and seven hundred and seventy five.

announced as my last will and testament in front of the following
witnesses:
