I, Edward McGuire of the County of Rowan and Parish of Saint Luke in the State of North Carolina being very weak in body but of perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the frailty of human nature and the shortness of life in this transitory world as well as for the better settling my worldly affairs for the price and well fair of my family whom I shall leave behind. I do make ordain and constitute this to be my last will and testament disannuling, revoking, and making void all other will or wills by me made and do constitute and appoint this to be my last will and testament and in the first place I give and bequeth my soul to God who gave it and my body to be buried in Christian and decent manner according to the custom of the country, the expenses to be paid out of my personal estate by my executors hereafter named. And as to what worldly wealth God has been pleased to bestow upon me I give and bequeth in the following manner that is to say in the first place I will that all my just and honest debts that I owe be justly paid out of my personal estate. Secondly I give and bequeth unto my beloved wife ISABELL McGUIRE and it is my will that she hold and enjoy the mansion house where I now dwell together with the plantation and all utensils of husbandry thereto belonging or appertaining for the use of raising and schooling my younger children likewise my stock of every kind to the same use except such as may fall to my children which is or may be of age before my son ANDERSON is fourteen years of age the whole of my personal property to be appraised as soon as convenient after my decease by two freeholders upon oath. 3rd I give and bequeth to my three sons HENRY, EDWARD, and ANDERSON all my real estate to be equally divided among them provided that if the child with which my wife is now pregnant is a son it shall share an equal part with those named. 4th I give and bequeth to my daughters ANNE, HANNAH, ELINOR, SARAH, AND RACHEL all my personal estate to be equally divided among them provided the child above mentioned is a daughter it shall share an equal part with the rest of the daughters. 5th It is my will that my wife hold the above mentioned house plantation until the above limited time if she remains my widow and only on that condition. 6th And lastly it is my will that my sons when they arrive to the age of fourteen years shall be bound apprentices to the blacksmith trade having privilege with the consent of their Guardian to choose their Master. And for the more faithful execution of the above will, I do constitute, nominate, and appoint my beloved wife ISABELL and my trusty friend JACOB WISEMAN executors of this my last will and testament but in case she changes her name her right of executorship decent to the surviving executor and then she shall draw her right of dower agreeable to law. Edward McGuire married Isabelle (unknown maiden name) and had eight named children, Henry, Edward, Anderson, Anne, Hannah, Elinor, Sarah and Rachel. Isabelle was pregnant when Edward McGuire’s will was written in 1785. In the 1790 census of Rowan County, NC, Isabelle is listed as head of household with eight people in her household - four males (under age 16) and four females (including head of household).
