NC in 1832, his account book of slaves was turned over to his son and executor DAVID L. POOL (b.1810-1861). This account book (containing the names of John Pool's slaves) has been preserved by the Kizziah family, especially by William D. Kizziah, historian and Registrar of Deeds of Rowan County from 1931-1951. This information is contained in the Rowan County Register by Jo White Linn, genealogist of Rowan Co., NC, in the article entitled "Accounts of the Slaves in the Estate of John Pool," and Mrs. Linn has generously allowed the names of these slaves to be published in the archives web page of Rowan Co., in an effort to help African-American researchers Slaves hired out in 1833 and the name of the hirer: Harry - by John Richey for $48.75 Joshua - by Peter M. Brown, whose father is probably Moses Brown. {Opinion of Betty A. Pace) A few other slave names appear in the loose estate papers of John Pool, the proceed for their hiring to be credited to the guardian accounts of two daughters of John Pool (Rebecca and Louisa). Slaves named in 1842 and 1843 are: Grace & her child Emilia - by Mrs. Simpaugh or Limpaugh $26.00 Lucy & infant - by Tho. E. Brown for $10.50 William - by Will Trott for $19.30 Dan - by Henry Smith $60.00 (?amt. unclear) In the will of John Pool (1832) he stated: " It is my will that my wife keep and raise on the plantation all my small Negroes, until they are able to do something, or otherwise disposed of." Elizabeth Pool, John Pool's wife, died in 1839, and it appears that some of slaves from the estate might have been sold then, if not earlier. Upon her death in 1839, David L. Pool would have begun dissolving the estate of his mother. In 1841 David L. Pool sold his half of the estate to his brother Joseph Pool (m. Mary Jane Hardie, daughter of Mary and John H. Hardie, of Rowan Co.); Joseph had already inherited his own half of the estate, and that may have included other slaves. Joseph may be the J. Pool above who hired slaves from the main estate. In 1849 Joseph Pool died and the plantation became the property of his wife Mary Jane Hardie Pool and her young children (John H., Joseph A., James L., Mary, Anna V.H.Pool).. She probably sold many of her slaves as she began to sell the property of her husband. I have been told that Mary Jane Hardie Pool and children moved to Catawba Co., NC, after 1850. In the 1850 census the widow Mary J. Pool is shown with her orphaned children and her sisters and her widowed mother and: Caleb - mulatto 2 slaves (names not shown)
