Rowan County, NC - Will of Henry Potts, 1775 January the 18th 1775 In the Name of God Amen-I Henry Potts of North Carolina Rowan County, Yeoman, being sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God and calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principally I recommend my soul into the hands of almighty God who gave it (nothing doubting but I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God) and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executorer and as touching such worldly Estate as it pleased God in this life to endow me with I give dismiss and dispose of the same in way and manner following: Imprimis [in the first place] I give and bequeath to my well beloved wife Margaret Potts the third part of all my moveable effects (after my lawfull debts is duly paid) together with my Negro wench named Violet and the benefit of the improvement whereon I now live during her widowhood also her bed and furniture and saddle with all the flax wool cotton and yarn belonging to the family. Item. To my beloved son James Potts I give and bequeath all the improvements I lately purchased from John May lying on the lower Creek together with my two black mares and grey mare and colt usually called his mare and also an equal share with his unmarried brothers and sisters of the moveable effects. Item. To my beloved sons William and Henry Potts, I give and bequeath the plantation or improvement on which I now live equally to be divided between them at the discretion of my Executors and also each of them an equal share with their unmarried Brother and Sisters of the moveable effects. Item. To my three married daughters viz Margaret Mary and Sarah I give and bequeath the sum of fifteen pounds to each of them and all the rest of my moveable effects I allow to be sold at public vendue (sic) and an equal division to be made among all my children except the three married ones above named, excepting my Negro boy Tom which shall be the property of my above named wife and my son William by their paying to the executors the sum of seventy pounds against the vendue money is due and that money also to be divided amongst my unmarried children. {change in handwritting-now very feeble and scratchy} and I do make and ordain James Pe_vrance Andrew Moreson and Peter Thomson to be the sold executors of this my last will and testament and I do hereby ______ revoke desallow and dis___ and request and be by one in aney way before this and no other to be my last will and testament.
