LIBERTY HILL CEMETERY Located in the vicinity of Union Mills, North Carolina, on the south side of SR 1326, Liberty Hill Church Road, three-tenths (3/10) mile from the intersection of US 221. This intersection is one and four- tenths (1 4/10) miles north of Gilkey. In the interest of historical authenticity inscriptions have been copied verbatim even though some spellings are known to be incorrect. No inscriptions were discerned on any of the field stones. There is no doubt that a number of graves exist which have no markers, but it is impossible to determine the exact number because of irregular spacing. The cemetery is well maintained and, except for some broken stones, is in good condition.Rows were copied from east to west and graves within each row were copied north to south. Copied by Jim Womack Sept. 14, 1993. Verified by Lynda Womack Sept. 18, 1993. Jackson, Mattie 1859 1897 Jackson, Hattie 1883 1884 Note: These two are on one double marker. Worker: William L. Horn, Jr. Smith, Campbell Rev., d. 1856 age 43 years OLD SOUTH CREEK CHURCH CEMETERY The South Creek Church was disbanded many years ago and very little is known about the church, although there are a few of the church records covering the latter years of its operations still in existence. The church was apparently located on what is known today as the Fire Tower Road in the Golded Valley area of Rutherford County. The remains of the old cemetery can be readily discerned and unmarked graves cover a large area of a hillside, possibly two acres in size, indicating that the church must have been in operation for a long time before its disbandment. Only three gravestones could be found with legible markings, but further digging in the graves might uncover more. The cemetery is overgrown with kudzu and briars but the grave stones are remarkably well preserved. The only exception is the stone which apparently was struck by road grading machinery. The base has been turned ninety degrees and dragged north several feet. It showed chips and scratches where it had been hit. The upright part of the stone containing the inscription was not located. The rows were read west to east and the graves within the row read north to south. This cemetery record was copied by Jim and Lynda Womack 19 March 1995. The only grave in this row is that described above. The head of the grave is right at the road bank. There is a foot-marker inscribed DT. It is on the second ridge down stream from the first small stream flowing into the creek below the bridge. At about the same elevation and on the first ridge is an abandoned house place marked by the remains of the rocks and bricks for the foundation. The cemetery is uphill from a thick growth of pine and in a hard wood forest. It was reached in December 1975 by Kenyon Withrow and Ben Sumner by descending the second ridge south of the home of James Tanner. The ridge is very steep. There are many graves in the cemetery that are marked only by field stones. At one time it was a well known grave site.
