Floyd ==================================================================== BUTLER-PAINTER CEMETERY Rutherford County, NC By Addaleen Street Directions: 5 miles east of Forest City, NC on US-74, exit onto Ellenboro- Henrietta Road, continue toward Caroleen .7 mile to Margie’s Drive. Turn right ( Margie’s Drive is a single lane graveled road). First dwelling on the right is a mobile home; cross over old railroad bed; continue past an abandoned farm house and barn on the left; road continues for a total of .5 mile to a dead- end at a brown frame house, and a man-made fishing lake. Land is posted. The cemetery is reached by hiking through the woods and over a hill. The cemetery was inventoried March 14, 1981. At that time there were 21 graves, and six of those have been identified as listed below. The cemetery has not been kept up and is grown up with pine saplings and brush. George Painter’s wife Sara “Sally” Pell Painter may be buried there since her grave has never been found elsewhere. A barbed wire fence enclosed the burial spot (25’ x 35’) and a cedar tree had been planted in the center to help identify where Myra Painter Butler, first wife of William Butler was buried in 1871. (William was buried at Oak Grove Methodist Cemetery beside his second wife). Apparently some of the graves existed before 1818 since the family of James T. Bridges requested permission for his burial because his body could not be carried elsewhere with the deep snow on the ground. The Painter home site was across the road from the abandoned farm house mentioned above, so members of the Painter family probably were buried there after 1818.
