GIBBS, COLUMBUS, NC--John Henry Gibbs, age 85, died Tuesday at 8:45 am at Rutherford county Hospital after a serious illness of two weeks and several months declining health. Mr. Gibbs was a native of Rutherford County and son of the late John and Mary McGraw Gibbs. He lived practically all his life in Polk County. He was a retired mail carrier in the Mill Springs section and a farmer most of his life. He was a moderator of the Green River Baptist Association, and chairman of the Board of Deacons, in Mill Spring Baptist Church, several years. He was a former member of Tryon Rotary Club, and the Jeff. T. Nelson Masonic Lodge, where he was Worshipful Master. He was sponsor of the 4-H Club Foundation, a member of Mill Spring School board, and Road Commission of North Carolina. Surviving are his wife, Nora Wilson Gibbs; four sons, Ernest H. of Columbus, Hurbert of Hickey, Gordon of Greenville, NC, and George Gibbs of Murfresboro, NC; 15 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 3 pm at Mill Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. W. C. Keller. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens, with Masonic rites. The body is at McFarland Funeral Home. It will be taken to the Church at 1:30 pm Thursday.
