Lewis Cogdell King was the grandfather of Helen King Dawkins who is now in possession of the LCK (Lewis Cogdell King) Family Bible. Entries in this old Bible records information about members of this King Family as far back a Stephen King (1756-1812) and his wife Amy (Amia) Oates King (1761-1818) who were the parents of John King, the father of Lewis Cogdell King. This branch of the King Family lived in an area of Sampson County near where the family of William Rufus King (who was elected VP of the United States in 1852) once lived prior to their departure to Alabama sometime between the years of 1818 and 1820. The admiration between these two branches of the King Family is evident by the fact that John King named his first born son, William Rufus King (1812-ca. 1880), after the son of William King and his wife, Margaret DeVane King. Some sources indicate that John King died while visiting his cousins in Dallas County, Alabama on 8 March 1844 and that he was buried there. John King had been especially close to John DeVane King (1797-1833), the younger brother of the Vice - President to be William Rufus King. At the present, I cannot confirm where John King, the father of Lewis Cogdell King died; however, the Archives in Raleigh (NC) houses many records of the settlement of his estate among his heirs after his death in 1844. The father of Helen Dawkins King was Lewis Carl King (1901-1960) and he lived all his life in the Newton Grove Township of Sampson County (NC). It was his father, Lewis Cogdell King, who as one of the earliest Commissioners of Sampson County had worked hard to establish the Newton Grove Township which took away some of the land in this northern area of Sampson County from the long established Westbrook Township. Many members of this branch of the King Family lived in the Newton Grove and Westbrook Townships of Sampson County for many years, most of whom were farmers. It so happened that Lewis Cogdell King (1826-1901) was an educator as well as a farmer and a grandson of his, appropriately named William Rufus King, also served in this capacity as a teacher in the school system of neighboring Wayne County, prior to his untimely death in 1951. This William Rufus King (1926-1951) was a brother to Helen King Dawkins. Helen Dawkins King was very gracious in sharing her family’s information with me. She now lives in the Fayetteville (NC) area. It is with her permission that I have attempted to make this information available to interested members of the King Family and others interested in genealogical research. Guy Potts, whom I have called on often to help me get King Family History posted online, is himself a member of our King Family. I wish to thank him for all his efforts in this regard. It is not an easy task to locate important documents like the Lewis Cogdell King Family Bible. Also, it is rather unusual to be afforded the opportunity to hold documents like these in your hands, review them, and be permitted to take pictures. It is rare that you locate people who are willing to share this kind of information as Helen King Dawkins has done. I hope the pictures provided of the pages of the LCK Bible which bear information about members of the Lewis Cogdell King Family will be legible to interested parties. I took great pains in trying to transcribe this information as accurately as I could. However, I wanted others to have the opportunity to see things for themselves and be able to draw their own conclusions. The way the Bible’s family information pages were arranged made it difficult to present in my transcription and so I had to make an adjustment. Also, those persons entering information over the years duplicated previous information and also placed the same information under different headings. However, I have found this old Bible (published in 1858) to be a great source of information about this branch of the King Family and I wish I could be so lucky as to find more of these old Bibles among other branches of this King Family and more people willing to make them available for me to review.
