Indenture of Apprenticeship
State of North Carolina
Sampson County

This Indenture made the twenty first day of March 1866 between H. H. FOSTER, 
Asst. Supr. R. L and A. L. for the Countries of Duplin and Sampson, N. C. of the 
one part and John R. SMITH of the other part, Witnesseth that the said H. H. 
FOSTER doth put place and bind unto the said John R. SMITH, six freed children 
(by and with the Mother's consent hereto annexed) named respectively JOHN, aged 
15 years, BETSY, aged 13 years, HANNAH, aged 10, SALLY, aged 5, ALECK, aged 3, 
and WILLIAM, aged 1 years to live of the manner of an apprentice and summon 
until the said apprentices shall attain the age of twenty one years; during all 
which time the said apprentices their master faithfully shall serve and his 
lawful commands everywhere obey. And the said John R. SMITH doth covenant and 
promise and agree that he will teach and instruct the said apprentices or cause 
them to be taught or instructed to read and write and that he will constantly 
find and provide for said apprentices during the term aforesaid sufficient diet 
washing lodging and apparel fitting for apprentices and also all other things 
necessary, both in sickness and health.
In Witness whereof the parties to these presents hath set their hands and seals 
the day and year above written.

I hereby give my free and voluntary consent that my Six children named 
respectfully JOHN, BETSY, HANNAH SALLY, ALECK and WILLIAM may be bound to John 
R. SMITH until the shall be twenty one years of age.
