Sampson County, NC - Young, Darden & Daughtry Affidavits, 1801 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I John S. Young, Mary Darden and Benj. Daughtry of the State of North Carolina and County of Sampson, was by virtue of a Commission issued from the Superior Court of Law at Newbern, summoned to attend at James Oates, Esqr. on the 25th day of August 1801, to give testimony in behalf of John Sherrod, in a certain matter of controversy defending wherein John Sherrod is Pltf and Josiah Suggs is Defendant I John Sampson Young being sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God declare and sayeth: He was once about thirty five years ago he saw old Alexander Cannady give his grand son Stephen Cannady given and delivered to and hand a certain Nigro by name Jeff, at the grand son coming of age the Nigro to be his right and property I Mary Darden being sworn as aforesaid sayeth when I was a small girl I often times heard my grand father Alexander Cannady and his wife my grand mother say that they had given a certain Nigro boy by name of Jeff to Stephen Cannady and after the death of Alexander Cannady the widow for bid the sale of said Nigro claiming him for to be the right of Stephen Cannady, also in the lifetime of the father and mother of Stephen Cannady, often times heard them claim him said Nigro for their son Stephen Cannady I Benj. Daughtry being sworn as aforesaid sayeth all I know concerning of the Nigro Jeff is that I often times heard the father and mother of Stephen Cannady say that said Nigro Jeff belonged to their son Stephen Cannady and Dempsey Cannady, Stephen Cannady next eldest brother, say that Jeff did belong to Stephen and he did not claim him or any right of him And they further sayeth not given under my hand and seal this 25 day of August and in the 26 year of the American Independence Anno Dom 1801 Jas.
