This Indenture made this the 26th day of September 1881 by and between O. M. Matthews and wife E. C. Matthews of the State of North Carolina Sampson County of the first part and Lilia James Bell wife of W. P. Bell – Eliza O Matthews – John F. Matthews – Joseph C. Matthews – Matilda C. Matthews – Junia E Matthews – Bertha S. Matthews – Mattie V. Matthews and Adolphus D. Matthews children of O. M. Matthews and his wife E. C. Matthews of the same State and County of the second part. Witnesseth that whereas the purchase ???? which was paid for the lands herein described know as the Amos Royal Place, said money was obtained by the sale of lands belonging to said O. M. Matthews and E. C. Matthews his wife being desirous of putting the title to said lands in the heirs of the bodies begotten. Now therefore for and in consideration of the sum of Two Thousand dollars in land paid to the parties of the first part by the parties of the second part – the parties of the first part have bargained sold and do by these presents convey unto the parties of the second part their heirs and assigns the following described tract of land being in Sampson County and lying in Hoe Swamp bounded as follows – Beginning at a stake near Piney Grove Church on the road Lane’s Corner and runs his line So 56 ½ E 203 Poles to a line his corner thence his other line So 40 W 170 Poles to an ash on the main run of Hoe Swamp thence to the main road thence with the Clinton and Goldsboro road 264 Poles to the beginning containing Two Hundred and fifty acres more or less to have and to hold unto the parties of the second part their heirs and assigns forever. The parties of the first part do reserve their life estate upon said land and their life estates and expressly understood to be excepted in this conveyance given under our hands and seals. O. M. Matthews his wife personally appeared before me this day and acknowledged the due execution of the annexed deed of conveyance and the said E. C. Matthews being by me privately examined separate and apart from her said husband doth state that she signed this same freely and voluntarily without fear or compulsion of her said husband or any other person and that she doth still voluntarily assert thereto witness any hand and private seal this the 26th day of September 1881.
