Newman; Sampson County Deed Book 32, pages 313 and 314. (Badly faded and hard to read) State of North Carolina Sampson County This Indenture made the 29th day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Fifty Three Between William Newman of the one part and Archibald W. Newman of the other part both of the State and County aforesaid. Witnesseth that the said William Newman for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which he hath and beareth unto his beloved grandson Archibald W. Newman have given granted and confirmed unto the said Archibald W. Newman his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the state and county aforesaid on the North Side of the Beaverdam Swamp and bounded as follows_ (Viz) Beginning at a Black gum on the run of the Beaverdam about a quarter of a mile below the Mill(?) Smith upper corner and runs his line No. 54(?) Et. (?) 90(?) poles to a Stake thence So. (?) 75 Et. 18? poles to a pine (down?) at the corner of an old field thence No. 24 Et. 96 poles to a dead pine in a branch thence No. 64 Et. 40(?) poles to a Stake (?) Thence No. 30 Wt.(?) 194(?) poles to a pine (dead & down) over the fork(?) thence So.(?) 11 Wt.(?) 175 poles to a red oak in the field thence No. 53 Wt. 320 poles to a Post(?) oak on the Side of the Beaverdam Swamp thence down the said Swamp as it meanders to the first Station - containing by estimation 362 be the same more or less To have and to hold unto him the sd Archibald W. Newman his heirs and assigns the above granted Land and premises forever and I the Said William Newman do covenant & agree to and with the Said Archibald W. Newman to warrant and forever defend against the claim of all persons whatsoever, only I reserve to myself and to my son Jacob Newman and his wife our life estate in the (?). In witness whereof I do hereunto set my hand and affix my seal the day and (?) first above written. William (his X mark) Newman (Seal) Signed sealed and delivered in presence of Joseph F. Newman North Carolina Sampson County Know all men by these presents that William Newman of the State and County aforesaid for the natural love and affection which I have and bear to my beloved grandson Archibald W. Newman do give and grant unto him the said (?) Archibald W. Newman one certain Negro boy Peter aged about 8 or 9 years To Have and to hold the above boy Peter unto him the said Archibald W. Newman forever free from the claim or claims of any and all persons. In witness whereof I do hereunto set my hand and affix my Seal August 29th AD 1853.
