Hardy Royal (seal) William Newman (seal) Sophia (her X mark) Newman (seal) Signed, Sealed and delivered in presence of Rezin Royal, _ Traverse Butler, _ State of North Carolina, Sampson County, Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, May Term 1832 Then was the foregoing Deed duly proven in Open Court by the oath of Traverse Butler, and ordered to be Registered _ Thomas I. Faison, Clerk Registered the 22nd day of July 1832 W. Faison Register, _ Additional Comments: Hardy Royal and William and Sophia Newman are the grantors. I believe that Sophia was William Newman's second wife, but do not know anything about her or what the special relationship is between William and Sophia, and John Butler. One avenue to be explored that doesn't seem especially promising from the little I've researched it is whether Sophia might have been the daughter or Major Robert Butler, who died in Sampson County in 1802. At the time of his will, Robert Butler's daughter Sophia was married to a Royal. This conjecture seems a pretty good fit with the Butler-Royal-Newman nexus found in this deed record which, of course, makes it unlikely to be true.
