Sampson County, NC - 1916 Confederate Monument Unveiling ~~~~~~~~~~ Clinton News Dispatch May 11, 1916 NC Archives & History Microfilm CIND-3 January 1916-December 1917 Unveiling Tomorrow As a result of arduous work with unfaultering courage the Ashford-Sillers Chapter Daughters of the Confederacy have seen their fond hopes realized. The monument which perpetuates the memory of Sampson County's sons who wore the gray stands at the right on the court square facing Main street, as the evidence of loving hands. On the front of the monument which stands about 17 or 18 feet high, are these words: In Honor of the Confederate Veterans of Sampson County "Who bore the flag of a Nation's trust, And fell in a cause though lost, still just, And died for me and you." 1861-1865 On the opposite side facing the court house are these words: Ashford-Sillers Chapter U.D.C. May 10th, 1916 On the east side is a Confederate Flag carved in bold relief while on the opposite side will be seen a Confederate Seal in bronze. The topmost stone is surmounted by a full size bronze statute, standing at rest. The monument is surrounded by a low granite wall and on either side facing the street. Inside the wall stand two granite post with a cannon ball mounted on both of them. Programme for May 12th, Memorial Exercises 9:15 - Assemblage of Veterans, Military Company and little girls with flowers 9:30 - March to Cemetery by Military Company, marshalls, flower girls and Veterans in Automobiles 10:14 - Music by band on court square and assemblage in court house for speech by Hon. Thos. W. Bickett, after which the crowd will reassemble on court square unvieling ceremonies. Dinner will be served immediately after these cememonies to Veterans, their wives, widows of Veterans, Military company, speakers and marshalls in armory.
