Shepard of the North Carolina Line, for the term of one year. Inscribed on the Roll of North Carolina at the rate of 8 dollars per month to commence on the 24th of April 1819. Certificate of Pension issued 30th Dec. 1819 and sent to Arch_ Murphy___ Fayetteville, No Ca Arrears to 4th of Sept 1819 33.60 semi-anl all’ee ending March 1820 48.00 total 81.60 State of North Carolina Cumberland County: On this day of April 1819 before me the subscriber one of the judges of the Superior Court of Law and Equity for the said state, personally appears William Keen age fifty eight years resides in Sampson County in said State, who being by me duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provisions made by the law out of congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War and to obtain pay for said services. That the said William Keen enlisted for the term of twelve months on the 25th day of January 1782 in Sampson County in the said state in the company commanded by Col. Shepard of the Regiment in the line of the State of North Carolina on the ____ establishment that he continued to serve in the said Co., or in the service of the United States under Capt. Mills until 25th Jan. 1783 when he was discharged from the service by Major G. McRee (McKee?) at Wilmington North Carolina, that he was at the ______of Charleston S. C in the year 1782. This deponent further sayeth that he has lost his discharge and that this is due him from the United States twelve monthly pay for his service as a ____ which pay the deponent has not seen himself nor authorized any other person to receive and that he is in _____ circumstances and stand in the need of the _____of his country for support and that he has no other evidence in his power of his said service except a nex__ affidavit. Sworn to and declared before me the day and year aforesaid William Keen (his mark) Subscribed and sworn before me April 1819 A. D. Humphrey, Judge aforesaid On the 8th day of June in the year of our Lord 1824 personally appeared in our Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for the county of Cumberland and State of North Carolina William Keen his age sixty three years residing in said county who being first sworn in according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows: that he fought in the Battle of Bryar Creek and that he enlisted for twelve months with Capt. Coleman in year 1782 and served under Capt. Mills in the 2nd Regiment of NC twelve months___- establishment and that he was discharged by Major McRae and that the said regiment was commanded by Col. Kosciuszko and that he received his pay monthly and I do solemnly swear that I was a resident of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift or sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with the intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provision of an act of congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval services of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me my property or ____contracts or debts due to me. Nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereunto amended and by me subscribed. My occupation is that of a cooper and farmer together. My ability to persue the __ is but feeble owing to a complaint that follows me namely the colick and my means to follow the other is limited owing to poverty. My wife Christian Keen age sixty four years is afflicted with several complaints and that she can render but little service. I have my daughter Delaney Keen age 23 years to maintain, herself and her three children. She is not possessed of common sense. One of her children 6 years age and 4 years and the other better than one year. I owe one hundred seventy two dollars and seventy five cents and I have debts that are due, come in dribbles and some of them very doubtful twenty three dollars and fifty five cents. William Keen ( shown signed) A schedule of my property 3 cows, 2 yearlings, 2 sows, 8 shoates, 2 pewter basins, 1 dish, half dozen knives and forks, 1 pot, 1 dutch oven, 3 earthen plates, half dozen spoons, 1 wash tub, 1 pole, 1 piggin, 1 churn, 1 small wheel, 1 pr. Cotton cards, 1 weeding hoe, 1 grubing hoe, 1 ax, 1 plough and ____, 1 coopers adze, 1 jointer, 6 tress hooks, 1 small chest total $46.72 200 acres of land $200 Amount of debt due the applicant $23.55 Debts due by the applicant $269.72 Appraised value of applicants property $94.97 Cumberland County Court June Term 1834 the above valuations made by the Courts of the property returned in the schedule of William Keen J. A. Cameron, Chairman Note: Letter from the government about the pension says he served as a private, corporal and sergeant in Capt.
