Born:  Feb. 15, 1837 
 
Piney Grove - Sampson County, NC
Son of John William Chestnutt
and Anna Patience Gum
 
Enlisted in the Confederate States Army
on July 12, 1862 in Clinton, NC
Assigned to the NC State Troops, 3rd Infantry - Company G.
Captured at Gettysburg, PA. on July 03, 1863
Confined to Lookout Point, Maryland until paroled May 14, 1865
Transferred to Aikens Landing (James River, Va.) for exchange
Private to Sergeant July 1865 
Returned Home - Wayne County, NC - Oct. 20, 1865
Became a Farm Dealer in 1866
 
Married Aly Ann McClenny
Daughter of William and Hester B. McClenny
Place of Marriage: Home of William McClenny
Minister: William Vernon, MG
 
Six Children - Father of John Joseph (J.J. - Bootsie) Chestnutt
 
Died of Influenza on August 15, 1908 in Sampson County
 
Laid to rest in The Best Cemetery, Mt. Olive, NC
