Oliver P. JAMES & TOM, freed boy.

Contract for Labor

This Indenture made and entered into on the Twenty first (21st) day of March 
A.D. 1866 between Oliver P. JAMES of the County of Sampson and State of North 
Carolina of the first part, and TOM, Freed boy aged about thirteen (13) years of 
the second part.
Witnesseth That the said Freed Boy TOM, hath agreed to work for the said Oliver 
P. JAMES from this day and date to the first day of January A. D. 1867; to do 
all kinds of labor common to the farms of the Country; to work Ten Hours per 
day; to do his work faithfully, and to be respectful in his department and the 
further agrees that one half of his monthly pay shall be retained by the said 
Oliver P. JAMES till the end of this Contract. And he further agrees that time 
lost by illness or absence without leave shall not be paid for.
And the said Oliver P. JAMES hath agreed that he will furnish the said Freed 
Boy, TOM with comfortable Quarters, Sufficient Rations and food and the amount 
per month which stand opposite his name and will treat him kindly both in 
sickness and in health, and will encourage the establishment of schools for the 
children of freedmen.
