(I’ve tried to transcribe this as written) Arthur Brown Sr’s Will In the name of God amen. I Arthur Brown Senr of the County of Sampson in the State of North Carolina being of perfect mind and memory calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for me once to die do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament That is to say I first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that Gave it and my body to the Earth etc(?) Nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the Same again by the mighty Power of God. And as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give and dispose of the same in the following manner and form (viz) First I give and bequeath to my beloved Son Caleb Brown a certain piece of land Begining at a pine on the branch on Sherod Brown’s line runing South 270 yards to a red oak corner thence S. E. to a red oak 36 yards to a corner thence E to a pine 180 yards to a corner thence S. to a pine 70 yards to a corner thence E 260 poles to the back line near the Road thence No. to one corner thence W. 260 poles to the first Station of this patron(?) of 300 acres thence up Brown’s line N. 58 E. to a red & white oak at the head of a branch thence down the branch to a pine at the begining. And also another Tract Begining at N. end of rice dam(?) running N. with the fence to a hickory corner thence the line to the head of the ready branch thence down sd. branch with the line to the run of Cohary thence down the run to Stephens’s line thence E. with Stephen’s line to a poplar corner dividing J. Stephen’s and Brown’s land thence a Strait line to the Begining to a Sasafras at the end of said dam by estimation 150 acres also two negro boys John and Sam. I also give and bequeath to my beloved son Arthur Brown the Tract of Land I purchased from Edward Stephens containing 130 acres and also one negro boy Green I also give and bequeath to my beloved son Edward Brown one negro Boy Lewis also one negro girl Lucinda. I also give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Mary Brown one negro woman cald Clary and her children also my beloved daughter Dicy Odam one negro woman by name Beck and her children also my beloved daughter Sally Brown one negro girl cal’ed Mary also my beloved son Robert Brown I give & bequeath one negro boy cald Henry. Also my beloved son John Brown one negro boy Handy also I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Nancy Newman one negro Girl Jane I also Give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Peggy Brown one negro girl Rachael also one negro Boy by name Peter also one feather bed and furniture I also lend to my dear beloved wife Lucy Brown all the remaining of my land during her natural life or widowhood afterwards to my son Arthur Brown. I also lend to my beloved wife all the remaining part of my property within and without doors during her natural life or widowhood after that to be equally divided between my ten children above named. I hereby make and ordain my beloved wife Lucy Brown and my son Arthur Brown Executors to this my last will and Testament sealed with my seal date July the 20th 1826.
