James Woodard’s Will Written 1831

In the name God Almighty I the said James Woodard of Sampson County 
being of sound and perfect mind and memory blessed be to God this day 
of December in the year of our Lord 1831 make and published my last 
will and testament in the following manner that is to pay all my just 
debts to be paid unto my beloved wife I give five Negroes to wit namely 
Grace, Tilly, Lucy, Charity and Arnel to her and her heirs forever I 
lend all my lands to her during her natural life after her death to be 
equally divided between my two daughters Martha Jean and Amey Ann 
Woodard unto my son Isaac Woodard ten dollars and To my daughter 
Catharine Woodard seventy five dollars & one bed and furniture and unto 
my Son William C. Woodard ten dollars unto my daughter Rachel Woodard 
Seventy five dollars one bed and furniture and the rest of my personal 
property I give to my wife and children bearing my name I also want my 
children Schooled on the same I hereby make and ordain my trusty 
friends Pedredenl(?) Caraway and Amey Woodard my wife to execute this 
my last Will and Testament In witness where unto I have Set my hand and 
seal the day and date above

____Febry Term 1840. This was the foregoing last Will and Testament 
duly proven in open Court by the oaths of Robert N. Herring Lancelot 
Jones ordered to be recorded Tho__ Faison-(?)
