It was zero weather The men were packed into train boxcars. They kept from freezing by building fires in the center of the cars and closing the doors. Of course, the smoke was very disagreeable. They reached Wilmington the next day on Chrsitmas Eve Dec 24, 1864. The good women of Wilmington fed them. Then, they marched to Sugar Loaf Mountain about 4 miles from Fort Fisher. What a Christmas Day! They were under fire - about 2600 shells an hour from Federal gun boats. The 42nd was under command of General Hoke. Submitted by Jodie Gee
