From the Notebook of Lilly Carter Hoffman: ( 1969-1970) Dear Elizabeth , I am convinced we have the right line for our Henry Marshall now. Have no records that actually give Henry's name but every other record points that way. I went through deeds, tax lists, wills for any county that they were in. Alexander Marshall born 1676 died 1743, and married Elizabeth Worsham, a daughter of Captain John Worsham who died in 1729. Alexander Marshall received large grants of land, thousands of acres, in Henrico, Goochland and Cumberland Co, Va. Some of the land was on the northside of the Appomattox River, some in the Parish of Southam on Butterwood(?) Creek in Cumberland Co this land always to go to the eldest son. Alexander's children were: Alexander died 1771 - William married 3 times, by his first wife he had four children; Robert (died young), Elizabeth, Anne and John born in 1735. By the second wife 6 girls and one boy to whom he left the land, but after 1775 when William the first died, they all broke the will and split the profits. John born in 1735 was living in Mecklenburg Co, Va. along with several other members of the family. He received thousands of pounds, Virginia currency, as we can see where the money came from. He bought and sold land in Mecklenburg, and Rebecca, his wife signed when ever she had to sign her dower right away. The last mention is in 1802 when Rebecca Marshall of Granville Co., NC relinguished her dower right to 155 acres of land bought in December, 1793. Someone went to see her as she could not make the trip back to Mecklenburg. Evidently John was a land Speculator and after a while the money ran out. There is no will or anything in either Mecklenburg or Cumberland County. I thought he might have gone back there to live 1805 (**note from JPG- He went to Orange Co, NC and died there). Henry Clay who married Lucy Greene had land that bordered on William Marshall and when Lucy's husband died in 1763 and no doubt William was also a widower, as they married by 1764. It's possible she took some of her children to live with her at Marshalls and some were underage and it would be quite natural for John and Rebecca (Clay) to fall in love, although he may have been quite a bit older. However that isn't unusual. I looked and looked for a marriage record but it isn't there. However I am satisfied John and Rebecca Clay married probably around 1769 and Rebecca would name one son after her father, Henry Clay, and one son John Jr., after his father. Everything points to this fact that John Sr. married Rebecca Clay and he was the son of William and grandson of Alexander. Hence, all the Va money and desire for land....... Lucy Green Clay Marshall would not only be John's mother-in-law but also his step mother.
