Henry brought his mule with him when he went to live with his daughter Nancy Marshall Carter.....The Carter boys were accustomed to stop work at twelve for their dinner. Every day the mule worked hard until eleven o'clock and then he would stop and not plow another row. At this time the boys had to give him his food and rest. When Henry died in 1866, the first item of his will read:" First-I give my former servant, Elick, my bay mule as a reward for his faithfulness to me." Joseph Marshall's Dog: After the death of Joseph Marshall (s/o Henry), his little dog was missed and a search was made for him. He was found sometime later on Joseph's grave. It was customary then to make a frame of slats and place over the mound of earth. The little dog had scratched and crawled underneath the slats and there remained sleeping and watching until death overtook him."
