She remembered quite clearly of seeing the funeral procession pass the Carter Home. The Masons were marching slowly and father, Robert A. Carter, was reverently carrying a large Bible. I've been told by a Mason that it is an honor to be chosen as the tiler. Florence considered it of historical value that Bob Carter carried the Bible in Dr. Bickett's funeral. Bob always kept himself in good standing and when he died in 1892, the same Albemarle Masonic Lodge marched in procession. He had joined the lodge in Albemarle at the age of 21 years. I'm not sure who was tiler at that time but it was probably his brother in law, Franklin Rummage. I can remember Uncle Frank, husband of my father's twin sisiter, Elizabeth Carter. As I grew up, he looked so old to me as he marched slowly carrying the large heavy Bible. Will Kimmer, Bob's foster son, and his oldest son, Ephraim Carter were Masons. Will was a 32 degree Mason. Ephraim died 9 September, 1943 and the Albemarle Masonic Lodge held services at the cemetery. John M. Boyette was the tiler.
