State-Wide, NC - William L. Saunders, 1891 ~~~~~~~~~~ A Sad Loss to the State North Carolina Loses a Talented Editor Raleigh, NC April 1 [Special] William L. Saunders, secretary of the state fair for twelve years died at 1:30 o'clock this morning, aged 56 years. He was colonel of a North Carolina regiment, and was wounded dangerously at the Wilderness, a ball entering his mouth and coming out of the back of the neck. He was the editor of twelve volumes of the Colonial Records, whose prefatory notes gave him a high standing as a historian; was editor of the Wilmington Jounal from 1872-1876, and with P.M. Hale founded the Raleigh Observer in 1876. He was for nearly twenty years chief adviser of the Democratic party in North Carolina. He suffered from rheumatic gout since 1870, and died therefrom.
