Stevenson was a son of James Stevenson and Elizabeth Brevard, and was born and married in North Carolina. He was married in 1827 to Eliza Ewing, daughter of Alvin Ewing and Sophia Wallis. They removed to Kentucky and thence to Bloomington, Ill. Their eldest son, Adlai Ewing Stevenson [Vice-President of the United States], was born in Christian County, Kentucky, 23 October, 1835, and married Letitia Green. The name Adlai, very uncommon, is found in the Stevenson, Brevard, Ewing, Osborn and Campbell families of Lincoln County, North Carolina during the Revolutionary period.
