State-Wide, NC - Ship EDINBURGH ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This hand-written record can be found on the Mezzanine at the NC Archives in the vertical file folder "SC Immigrations & Emmigrations" and was contributed by Hale Sweeny of Durham, NC on 20 Feb 1983 List of Petitioner Immigrants from the Ship EDINBURGH Between the first of January and the first of April, 1753, eleven individuals appeared before the S.C. Governor's Council in Charles-Town, requesting land and assistance in settling, and stating that they had arrived in Charles- Town from Philadelphia on board the Ship EDINBURGH, Capt. Russel. They further stated that they had left Rotterdam on Capt. Mason's ship, intending to go to Carolina, but had been taken to Philadelphia, where they had directly reshipped on the EDINBURGH for Charles-Town. Among these eleven were seven wifes and 18 children. According to the South Carolina Gazette, Issue No. 967 dated 25 Dec 1752, the EDINBURGH arrived in Charles-Town sometime during the week 18 to 15 December. The first petition was considered on 10 January 1753 and the last one found was considered on 23 March 1753. The petitioners are listed below, along with the names and ages of their children, the dates of their petitions, the numbers of acres requested, and the page number locations of their petitions in Volume 21, Part 2, of the S.C. Council Journals. These journals are archived in the S.C. Archives, Columbia, S.C. D. Daniel Rupp "A Collection of Upwards of 30,000 Names of Immigrants in Pennsylvania; Leary, Stuart Co., Phil. Pa. 1927" has published lists of immigrants who took the Pennsylvania oaths of allegiance, indexed by the date the oaths were taken and the names of the ships (and their captains) in which the immigrants arrived. Among these lists, for the fall of 1752, is only one ship with a captain named Mason, and that is the ship NEPTUNE, Captain John Mason.
