EDWARD LEE SIMMONS CAPT. E.L. SIMMONS, FERRY PILOT, DIES Employed by Portsmouth-Norfolk County System Last 18 Years. Capt. Edward Lee Simmons, 71 for 18 years employed by the Portsmouth-Norfolk County ferries as a pilot, died in a Norfolk hospital yesterday morning at 8 o'clock after an illness of one week. He had been in ill-health for the last year. Captain Simmons resided at Carrollton. He had not been in service at the ferries for the last 12 months. He had lived in this section for about 50 years and was a native of North Carolina. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nannie E. Johnson Simmons. He held membership in the Smithfield Baptist Church and the Masonic Order, being affiliated with the Smithfield Lodge. The body was removed to the Charles H Myers Funeral Home, 720 Court Street, where funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
