NATHAN YOUNG SUPERIOR COURT for this county (Guilford) yet continues in session and there is no probability of its terminating until tomorrow evening. State Docket was taken up Monday last; State against NATHAN YOUNG, for forgery (Case from Stokes County) was taken up—Verdict, guilty—Sentence 39 lashes, remain in the pillory one hour, imprisonment 12 months, fine $5. The Solicitor General (who handles all of his cases with great ability) told the Sheriff that the prisoner “was suffering for corporal punishment,”, that he wanted the hickory laid upon him severely, that he had no doubt that it would do the prisoner a great deal of good, and on Tuesday, at 3 o’clock p.m., YOUNG was conducted to the whipping post and received 39 lashes, executed by W. A. WINBURN, who displayed a disposition to gratify the Solicitor General’s wish – for “he made every lick count.” YOUNG had been tried for a similar offense a few years ago, in Stokes County—he was found guilty, but appealed and got a new trial, which he had removed to this county, and which he gained, and leaving the whipping post – “solitary and alone” – but it seemed that he admired its beauty too much to stay away long – so returned here this week and gave the “old widow” and “salutation whose hearty return will long be remembered by “her lover” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/stokes/court/young1357gwl.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ncfiles/ File size: 2.0 Kb
