By Charles Ray Harper Combs is an English name meaning , one Who comes from valleys. In Scotland shortened From MacComb , was a Robert Comb in Edinburgh Scotland 1728. 1. Ned Edward ( Zedekiah ) Combs - Born Abt. 1742 Scotland Died Abt. 1778 Surry Co. N.C. wife Sarah, in Revolution was Killed by Tories, when he got within a mile of home. His Widow and children fled to Virginia, and some of the older ones later went on to western Virginia. Ned Combs and a brother came from Scotland, but then got separated. Ned then settled on the Yadkin River in N.C. Their settlement had numerious Tories. At time of his death must have been living in Surry Co. so his son Zedekiah was born on way to Surry Co. in Grayson Co. Va. that's where his widow went after his murder by Tories. Other Combs families settled on Yadkin River Surry Co. N.C. Indicates their might be some relationship between the families of Mason Combs Sr.1713 - 1785 son of John Combs 1662 - 1716 lived at Rappahannock Creek King George Co. Va. son of Josiah Combs, Mason Sr. Died in Surry Co. N.C. Francis Combs lived beside him on the Yadkin. 2. Zedekiah ( Zadoc ) Combs - Born 1775 Grayson Va. Died Aug, 1821 Grayson Va. M- Elizabeth Johnson Zedekiah lived on Pauls Creek and Crooked Creek on April 25, 1807. Had 50 acres then. 1815 tax list says on a farm on Back Creek 32 acres valued at $15, a Tract of 50 acres on Pauls Creek unimproved $10 Sighted by mark . Was $0.42 for one horse and 7 head Of cattle, one white male over 16 in household. In August of 1821, tax the Carrol Co. Combs lived on Top of a mountain at Pipers Gap. Sold 15 acres to Moses Rody Nov..10, 1810 for $220, head of Pauls Creek on east side of sugarloaf. He had a partner in this Sale John Scudders was on deed but got no money yet. Proven Aug. 1817 Grayson Co. Va. 2. William Combs ( III ) - Born Sept. 2 1807 Carroll Co. Va. Died July 4, 1862 near Dry Branch Raleigh Co. Va. M- Jan.5, 1835 Patrick Co. Va. Elizabeth (Betsy ) Sawyer B- Sept.30, 1813 Va. Died - March 6, 1895 near Dry Branch Raleigh Co. W.Va. Both buried in Willis Cemetery beside Rt. 3 near Dry Branch Raleigh Co. W.Va. Old home place on Rock Creek Raleigh Co. W.Va. Wm. 1807 - 1862 son of Ned Combs 3. Columbus Washington "Lum " Combs also Called Christopher Columbus Combs Sr. - Born - May 1845 Raleigh Co. Va. Died ? 1915 M- 1st Sarah Acord Feb. 12, 1869 Wyoming Co. W.Va. Dau. of Robert Acord 1 1827 - 1930 and Michelle Oliver B- Ohio son of John Acord and Nancy Harper of Ohio M- 2nd Mary Frances ( Maud ) Pettry Dec.2, 1876 Raleigh Co. W.Va. Died Dec.19, 1940 Charleston Kanawha Co. W.Va. M- July 18, 1902 Raleigh Co. W.Va. she is buried in Eunice Cemetery a few miles before you get to Arnett, a few Miles above Rock Creek and a little futher from Frien-dly coming from Whitesville on Rt.3 toward Beck-ley. She lived at Packville, just below Whitesville just to Raleigh side of Boone Co. line. Mary Frances said Colunbus was not a very respective person, got their food from stolen eggs etc… But we are only hearing one side, she M 1st Samuel Underwood Nov.27, 1893 in Raleigh Co. W.Va. M- 3rd John S. Stanley he is also buried in the Eunice Cem. On Rt.3. 4. Clara Easter Combs - Born - April 19, 1908 Boone Co. W.Va. Died Aug.2, 1973 Kanawha Co. W.Va. M- Lewis Alfred Harper 1904 - 1966 5. Oscar Wallace Harper - Born Jan.12, 1932 Laurel Ck. Fayette Co. W.Va. Died July 23, 1973 Kanawha Co. W.Va.
