Surry County, NC - Widow's Pension Application, Martha Mathis ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WIDOWS'S APPLICATION FOR PENSION STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA } COUNTY OF SURRY } On this 15 day of August, A.D. 1918, personally appeared before me, A.L. Sparger J.P., in and for the State and County aforesaid, Martha Mathis, age 90 years, and a resident at Mount Airy post-office, in said County and State, and who, being duly sworn, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension under the provisions of an act entitled "An act to amend chapter 674 of the Laws of 1907, for the relief of certain Confederate Soldiers, Sailors and Widows," ratified March 8, 1909 ; that she is the widow of the late Bradley Mathis who enlisted in Company H 4th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops, on or about the 1st day of July, 1861, to serve in the armies of the late Confederate States. She further states : That she was married to said Soldier or Sailor before the first day of January, 1868 ; That she is now a widow, and has been for twelve months immediately preceding this Application for Pension a bona fide resident of North Carolina ; That she holds no office under the United States, or under any State or County, from which she is receiving the sum of three hundred dollars as fees or as salary annually ; That she is not worth in her own right, or the right of her late husband, property at its assessed value for taxation to the amount of five hundred dollars ($500), nor has she disposed of property of such value by gift or voluntary conveyance since the 11th of March, 1885. K, 4th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops, and that they believe her to be the identical person she represents herself to be, and that the facts set forth in her affidavit are correct to the best of their knowledge and belief, and that they have no interest, direct or indirect, in this claim. K 4th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops, for a pension under the provisions of an act entitled "An act to amend chapter 674 of the Laws of 1907, for the relief of certain Confederate Soldiers, Sailors and Widows," ratified March 8, 1909, and the proofs filed in support thereof ; that we are satisfied the said Martha Mathis is a widow of the late Bradley Mathis, who enlisted in Company K, 4th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops, on or about the 1st day of July, 1861. We certify the following allegations set forth in her application to be true, namely : That she is, and has been for twelve months preceding this Application for Pension, a bona fide resident of North Carolina ; that she holds no office under the United States, or under any State or County, from which she is receiving the sum of three hundred dollars as fees or as salary annually ; that she is not worth in her own right, or the right of her late husband, property at its assessed value for taxation to the amount of five hundred dollars ($500), nor has she disposed of property of such value by gift or voluntary conveyance since the 11th of March, 1885 ; and therefore her application is correct and just under the act.
