Among the pension records in the National Archives is a file cited as above. A summary of the personal data in this file appears below. Parents: Not mentioned. Birth: June 1762 or 1763 in the part of Surry County which was later Stokes County, North Carolina. Family: The veteran married Mary Griner about February 25, 1781. In 1843 she stated that she was 83 years old and in 1855 it was stated that she was 89 years old. In 1850 it was stated they reared a large family of children, the oldest of whom was Mathias who was then about 68 years old. No other names of children are given. His widow died July 21, 1857. At the time of his enlistment the veteran was residing on Dan River in Surry County, North Carolina and he was living there in 1802 and in 1833. In 1855 the veteran's widow was a resident of Yadkin County, North Carolina. Death: July 5, l843, in Surry County, North Carolina. Service:When the veteran applied for pension it was stated that he first enlisted the last of November or the first of December 1771 and served at various times until about November 1781, amounting to 11 months and 15 days. He served as Private and First Sergeant with the North Carolina Troops under Captains Salatheel Martin, Bastick, Minor Smith and Hill, and Colonials Hampton and Campbell. He was in the battle of Camden and in two battles at Wilmington, North Carolina. Pension: The veteran was pensioned on Certificate 12393 which was issued under the act of June 7, 1732. The pension was paid at the North Carolina Agency. His widow was pensioned on Certificate 5069 which was issued under the Act of July 4, 1836. This pension was also paid at the North Carolina Agency.
