Sullivan, member of the Birmingham Genealogical Society) OUR HERITAGE A POTPOURRI OF INFORMATION ABOUT UNION COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE The first Shepherds came to America in 1635 from England; among them were three sons of John Shepherd. 1. Ralph Shepherd, b. 1693 2. Thomas Shepherd, b. 1605 3. John Shepherd 1. Ralph Shepherd settled near Boston, Mass. His wife was named Thankful Lord. Their children were A. Sarah Shepherd, b. 1633 in England; B. Isaac Shepherd, b. June 20 1639, at Weymouth, Mass; C. Trial Shepherd, b. Dec. 1641; D. Abraham Shepherd, no data; E. daughter, Thakas Shepherd, b. Feb. 10, 1652; F. Jacob Shepherd, b. 1653. 2. Thomas Shepherd (bro. of Ralph) born in England, 1605, also settled near Boston. He had and several of his brothers were minister of the Gospel. He was a special friend of John Harvard; he and John Harvard founded Harvard University in 1636. 2nd Generation: Rev. Jeremiah Shepherd (son of Rev. Thomas Shepheerd), b. 1648 married Mary Wainwright graduated from Harvard 1669, preached at Lynn, Mass., forty years died 1720. 3. Rev. John Shepherd Jr. (bro. of Ralph and Thomas Shepherd) settled in Virginia where he was pastor of Christ's Church in Middlesex Co. from 1668 until his death in 1683. The Shepherds were prominent in church and civic affairs in colonial days in Virginia. They were friends of Taylor, Madison and other prominent pioneer families of Virginia. Shepherdstown, Va. (later W. Va.) was named for these Shepherds. These Shepherds used Biblical names for their sons from the beginning especially [the names] Isaac and Jacob. Branches of this Shepherd family came to N.C. and according to deed records were living in Anson Co. as early as 1757. William Shepherd Sr., born about 1744, married Jemimah Johnson. Their known children were: 1. Jasper 2. John 3. Jacob 4. Isaac 5. Thomas marred Jemimah ______. 6. Elizabeth married Thos. White, 28 May 1700. 7. William Jr. born 1775, married Elizabeth Yerby (daughter of Everette (Averet) and Sarah (McMillian) Yerby, born about 1775 of Mecklenburg, Co. Their children, all born in Anson County, on dates indicated were 1. Michael Shepherd, 1799; 2. John Shepherd, 1795; 3. Will Shepherd III; 4. Isaac Shepherd; 5. Mary Louisa Shepherd; 6. Hugh Shepherd, 1803; 7. Jamirah Shepherd; 8. Thomas Shepherd; 9. Sarah Shepherd, 1811; 10. Jacob Shepherd, 1812; 11. Robert Shepherd, 1815; 12. Elizabeth Shepherd; 13. Richmond Mack Shepherd; 15. Francis Shepherd, 1805. Michael Shepherd Sr., (eldest son of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) married Adaline ____ (have been told she was his second wife; no proof. His children were A. Michael LaGand Shepherd, b. 1823; B. Abigale Sophronia Shepherd, b. 1825. C. Elizabeth Shepherd, b. 1824, married Bedford H. Williams of Anson Co. N.C. Feb. 17, 1845. They settled in Fayette, Ala. where he was a lawyer, later county judge. D. Augemima Shepheerd, b. 1828; E. Emeline Shepherd, b. 1829; F. Lewellyn Shepherd,m b. 1831; Mack Copeland Shepherd, b. 1840. All of the above children born in Anson. In 1845 the above Michael Shepherd Sr. and his family including his married children settled in Fayette Ala. where he died in 1850. Michael Shepherd Sr. also brought his widowed mother Elizabeth (Yerby) Shepherd with him to Ala. She was murdered by a Negro woman slave in Fayette County in 1850. 2. John Shepherd (second son of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) married Jane _____. They settled in Henderson Co. Tenn. The 1850 census gives John Shepherd, 55, b. N. C. ; Jane Shepherd, 48, b. Tenn; Mary M. Shepherd, 18, b. Tenn.; Francis Shepherd, 13, b. Tenn.; William Shepherd, 30, b. N.C.; Elizabeth Shepherd, 25, b. Tenn; Nancy Shepherd, 2, b. Tenn; William J. Shepherd, 1 month; Thomas Gilbert, 13, b. Tenn. 3. William Shepherd (third son of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) settled in Holmes, Miss. 4. Isaac Shepherd (son of William Sr. and Elizabeth Shepherd) b. 1800 married Martha Poe, daughter of Simon Poe of Anson Co., N.C. Isaac Shepherd settled in Fayette Co., Ala. in 1826 with the Poes and other pioneers from Anson Co. N.C. Their children and dates of birth were: A. William Shepherd, b. 1826; Michael M. Shepherd, b. 1826; C. Jasper Shepherd, 1831; D. Elizabeth Shepherd, 1835; F. Thomas Shepherd, 1840; G. Martha Shepherd, b. 1843; H. Nancy F. Shepherd 1834. A Baptist Church was founded in the home of Isaac Shepherd in Newtonville, Fayette Co., Ala in 1834. It was named "Shepherd" and has been an active church since then. The Isaac Shepherd Family moved to Saline Co., Ark. in 1825 and lived there until their death; they have many descendants in Arkansas and other western states today (1963). 5. Mary Louise Shepherd (dau. of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) married William Brazeale of S.C. They settled in Tuscaloosa County, Ala. Their children: A. Tilliah Brazeale; B. Rachel Brazeale; C. Louisa Elizabeth Brazeale; Data copied from will on file in Tuscaloosa, Ala. 6. Hugh Shepherd (son of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) married Elizabeth Reed (daughter of Rev. Isaac Reed of Franklin Co, Tenn.) The Reed and Hugh Shepherd families moved to Panola County, Texas in 1836. the 1850 census of Panola Co. gives the following and birth places: Hugh Shepherd, 45, N.C.; Elizabeth (Reed) 3j8, Tenn.; Francis 12, Texas; Panola, 9, Tenn.; Isaac, 6, Texas; Samuel 3, Texas; Richmond, 3 months, Texas; William J. Shepherd 20, Tenn; Eliza (Pike) 17, Tenn.; Samuel, 5 months, Texas. 7. Jamirah Shepherd Blach (dau. of William and Elizabeth Shepherd). We have no data on her except she is listed among the other children as one of the heirs of William Shepherd estate which is on file in Anson Co., N.C. dated 10 Oct. 1840. 8. Thomas Shepherd (son of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) moved from Anson Co., N.C. to Fayette, Ala. After 1857 settled in Monroe Co., Miss. 9. Sarah Shepherd (dau. of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) born 1811, married Griffen Trull of Anson Co., N.C. They also moved to Fayette Co., Ala. and lived there until their death. Their children and death dates were: A. Cornelia Trull Aug. 15,1836; B. Elizabeth Trull; C. J.G. Trull. June 12, 1839; D. Malissa Trull, 1843; E. John Trull, 1846; G. Thomas Trull,k 1848; H. Mary Trull, 1849. 10. Jacob Solon Shepherd (son of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) born 1812 in Anson Co. N.C. settled in Newtonville, Fayette Co., Ala. in late 1830's married Mariah Nall (dau. of Martin Nall and Peninia (Poe) Nall. Their children and births: A. Louisa A. Shepherd, Feb. 2, 1843; B. Anjemirah Shepherd, Feb. 22, 1845; C. James Martin Shepherd, April 7, 1847; D. Panina Elizabeth Shepherd, April 7, 1847; E. Maressa C. Shepherd, Nov. 18, 1851; F. Sarah Frances Shepherd, June 30, 1854; G. Mary Etta Shepherd, Nov. 14, 1858; H. Robert Mack Shepherd, Aug. 11, 1859; I. Virginia Catherine Shepherd, Dec. 8, 1860. 11. Robert Shepherd ( son of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) born about 1815 in Anson, N.C. married Sarah Biven (dau. of Nathaniel Bivens Sr.) they moved to Fayette Co. Ala. in 1845. After 1850 they settled in Rankin Co., Miss. Their children and birth dates: A. Margaret Shepherd; B. Elizabeth Shepherd, 1845; C. William Shepherd, 1843; D. Thomas Shepherd, 1845; E. Adeline Shepherd, 1847; F. John Shepherd, 1848; G. Richard Shepherd, 1850. 12. Elizabeth Shepherd (daughter of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) born in Anson Co., N.C. never married. She moved To Fayette Co. Ala, In 1845 with her widowed mother and brothers and sisters, where she died in 1862. 13. Nancy Shepherd ( daughter of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) We have no data on her except she was given as one of the heirs of William and Elizabeth shepherd in Deed Book 1, p. 208, dated Feb. 15, 1845, Union Co., N.C. 14. Richmond Mack Shepherd (son of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) born about 1816; moved to Fayette Co. Ala. was second postmaster at Newtonville, ala. in 1852; married Susan ___. They had two children Died 1859. A. Mary Shepherd B. Sarah Shepherd. 15. Frances Shepherd (daughter of William and Elizabeth Shepherd) born 1805 in Anson Co. N.C. married Daniel Watts; settled in Holmes Co, Miss. The Census of 1850 gives the following Watts and dates of birth: Daniel, 50, N.C.; Frances (Shepherd) 45; Laura, 17, N.C.; Elizabeth, 16, N.C.; Clemma, 12, N.C.; Robert, 6, N.C.; Richmond, 4, N.C.; William, 20., N.C.; Louisa, 19, S.C.; Joseph E., 2, Miss.; Thomas 22, N.C.
