He was reared in this county and emigrated to Alabama 55 years ago and this is his first visit back. One of the very best incidents which he relates of the long ago is in regard to the naming of this county. After the county had been, or was about to be, formed out of portions of Mecklenburg and Anson, a convention assembled to name the new county. Two Democrats and two Whigs were appointed on a committee to retire and suggest a name. The Democrats wanted to call it in honor of Old Hickory, who was born within its borders and so stuck out to the last that the name should be Jackson. The Whigs were equally determined to call it in honor of Henry Clay. The committee thus could not come to an agreement and when they were about to report, Mr. Irby, who was on the committee, suggested that they both give in and call it Union. They agreed and the convention ratified the name in a whoop and doubtless all went out and took a drink, though on this point, Mr. Irby is non committal.
