Broom From _The Waxhaw Enterprise_, August 3, 1922 Mr. Calvin Broom, one of the most widely known citizens, died suddenly at the home of his son, B. C. Broom, in Sampson County, last Thursday, the body arriving at Waxhaw on the midnight train Saturday. Mr. Broom would have attained his 92nd birthday on the 14th of next February, had he lived. He was a man of remarkable vitality, which he preserved to a surprising degree up to the day of his death. Mr. Broom was thrice married. His first marriage was to Susan R. Godfrey, this marriage resulting in the following chldren: Martha, who married George Godfrey and has since died; Joseph, who died at about fifteen years of age; J. B., who died about 15 years ago; W. C., who resided at Waxhaw. His second marriage was to Mrs. Margaret A. Godfrey, who was a daughter of James McNeely, the children from this marriage being Hugh, who has been dead about 15 years; Bunyan C., who resides at Clinton, N. C.; Della, who married Frank A. Krauss, and resides at Waxhaw; Maggie, who married James Garrison, and now resides at Homeland, Ga.; Carrie who married Dr. McLeod, and also lives at Homeland, Ga.; and Cecil R. who resides at Huntington, W. Va. Mr. Broom's third marriage was to Mrs. Annie Strange, a sister of Mr. W. P. Harris, of Waxhaw. A brother, Mr. Burrell Broom of Belair, S. C., and a sister, Mrs. Abe Walker, of Sandy Ridge Township, survive. Mr. Broom was a man of strong personality, who commanded the respect and esteem of everyone. He was a leader and a builder in this community a very long period. He was of a very social disposition, and delighted in making and maintaining lifelong firendships with those with whom he came in contact. He never forgot his friends, and in his old age particularly derived much pleasure from his associations with those whom he had known closely for many years. He had several times in the past few months made the trip from Sampson County, where he had spent the greater part of the past three years, to Waxhaw, to visit relatives, and stated shortly before his death that he hoped the final summons would come to him while he was here. Deceased was a member of the Baptist church, and the funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at King Street Baptist Church, followed by the interment in the old Waxhaw Baptist church cemetery, Rev. Geo. B. Thompson and Rev. D. C. Ballard, officiating at the services. An immense number of people attended the last rites.
