Sendgikoski n/a December 19, 2010, 6:22 pm Personal Herman Starnes Another well-known and respected Union County resident passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2008. Mr. Starnes was age 89 and a descendant of a distinguished family that helped to settle the area that was later formed into Union County in 1842. Following their migration to America, the Plyler and Starnes families came to this part of North Carolina in the 17th and 18th Centuries and were notable for helping settle this area. Herman was born on March 19, 1919 in this county and was the son of John Hurley and Cantie Plyler Starnes. Because of the notability of both sides of his family, he became quite interested in their genealogy and later became the family historian, publishing the genealogy of both his father's and his mother's ancestral lines. One book was entitled "The Plyler Genealogy, 1688 - 1965". He also co-authored a book about his paternal family, "Of Them That Left a Name Behind" dating from 1665. His father's family came to America from their native land of Alzey, a small village in Germany, first settling in the upper Hudson Valley of New York State. They soon migrated southward to what would become Union County in the late 1700s, first residing on Cane Creek, and then in the community of Altan, six miles south of Monroe. He also wrote many articles concerning his and his wife's families, was a member of the committee to publish Volume 2 of The Heritage of Union County, NC in 2004, a charter member of the Carolinas Genealogical Society, the Union County Historical Society, and was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. His wife of 47 years, Maude Deese Starnes, had preceded him in death. He was the brother of C. Dudley, Douglas, a twin brother, Herschel Starnes, and a sister, Julia Mae Starnes McManus, who also preceded him in death. Survivors include one son, Michael D. Starnes, a sister, Eleanor Starnes Hammonds, and a step sister, Libbey H. Thomas. Interment was in Lakeland Memorial Park Cemetery, Monroe, two brothers, Ralph and John H. Starnes. He also leaves a wide circle of friends who mourn the passing of this wonderful gentleman. A life-long member of the Benton Heights Presbyterian Church, a Service to Celebrate his life was conducted there on Wednesday, April 30.
