Hollomon Author: Charles R. Hollomon From Charles R. Hollomon Attorney at Law 500 King Richard Road Raleigh, North Carolina To: Mrs. I. F. Carter September 26, 1972 Americus, Georgia Dear Mrs. Carter, I am assuming that you have not cleared up your research problem on your Hollomon line. I found this record In fugitive records which is almost certainly the only place where the relationship is recorded anywhere. The original records, I believe, have been destroyed and these are microform copies made from the originals. John Hollomon died in Wake County in August, 1849 (see later) survived by his widow (second or third wife) Nancy, son Edwin and the following children and grandchildren, etc. Axum (Exum) Hollomon (son) deceased who is believed to have left issue unnamed. Davis Hollomon (son), Margaret (Peggy) Hollomon who married Richard Bright; Elizabeth (Betsy) Hollomon, a daughter who married William Wilson, was dead by 1850, Nancy a daughter who married William Dupree and Dupree is dead by 1850, The son Exum was living shortly before 1850, it being noted "that Axum Hollomon departed this life about 1848 or 1849. If he has any lawful heirs, then defendants are not advised and therefore cannot affirm or disaffirm". Another son, Jeremiah Hollomon is deceased before his father John and did leave heirs of whom one is "Liddy" (Lydia) Holloman who intermarried with John Avent:" Others of Jeremiah's children named are "Patty" (Martha?) who intermarried with William Gaddis, Willey who married to John Jones, William Holliman and Merritt Holliman and Albert Holliman, Guelda Malinda (a daughter) who married Thomas Gaddis and Eliza who married Redding Stevens." Jordan is mentioned by one attorney as "son of the said John Holloman, deceased" but it was "proved" that "Jordan Holloman was a younger brother of John Holloman, deceased" (and not John's son). John Holloman, the deceased, and Jordan Holloman his brother, were natives of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, but had been residents of Wake County for many years. Jordan himself gives the statement of kinship. Another statement shows the names of Jeremiah Holloman's children as follows. It is made by a person (Jordan) purporting to correct the first statement (by widow Nancy). Jordan says Jeremiah's children are John, William, Albert, Merritt, "Liddy" who intermarried with John F, Avent, Polly (Mary?) who intermarried with William Gaddis, Willma who intermarried with John Jones, Guella Malinda who intermarried with Thomas Gaddis (both Gaddises may be Geddises, the "e" and "a" not being too clearly written), and Eliza who married Redding Stevens. Davis Hollomon, Richard Bright and wife Peggy, Betsy Wilson and Nancy Dupree testify that John Hollomon died sometime around the last of August, 1850 and that his heirs are (1) Edwin Holliman (2) Davis Holliman (3) Peggy Bright who married Richard Bright (4) Betsy Wilson, widow of William Wilson (5) Nancy Dupree, widow of William Dupree (6) John Holloman (7) Jeremiah Holloman, deceased, leaving issue (8) Axum Holloman, deceased, leaving issue. This statement leaves out Eliza, the daughter who married Redding Stevens, and this is evidently an error. John F. Avent is mentioned in his relationship as husband of "Liddy" Holloman a number of times. You will have no trouble finding Jordan Holloman in the Hollyman Family Book going back to the first Christopher Hollyman (Holloman) in Virginia who was there by as early as 1645 (even though he appears as an incoming passenger in Hotton's List twice around 1650 and 1652 as if just arriving). He had simply been on a trip -- probably over to Cape Charles where John Holloman -- probably his father -- died December 3, 1650 as the records of Accomac (North- hampton) County show, his Will having been made in extremis on the same date. Some of the heirs of John Holloman of Wake County were mentioned as being not now residing in this State but Liddy and John F. Avent were living here then. Well, there it is. I hope this will be helpful to you. Cordially yours, /s/ Charles R. Holloman NOTE; The above information is submitted to perhaps help someone else with this particular Hollomon family. Since Mr. Hollomon stated that his source (the fugitive records) "is almost certainly the only place it is recorded anywhere", I thought it might help to know it can be found in "Fugitive Records". The Hollyman Family Book Mr. Holloman was referring to is titled THE HOLLYMAN FAMILY by George A. Hollomon. It can be found in the Raleigh, North Carolina State Library.
