Wake County, NC - Matthews Family Cemetery ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ April 2, 2004 Matthews Family Cemetery, Cor. SR. 1010 & Summercrest Dr., White Oak Twp., Wake C0.,NC. (N 35°42.521' W 078°48.407' GPS) (N 35°42'31" W 78°48'24" DMS) From Hwy. # 1 South, take Exit # 96, onto SR. 1010, go east (towards Cary) for 1.5 mi., to the intersection of Summercrest Dr. and 1010 Rd. Summercrest enters 1010 from the north side and does not cross 1010. Drive in and park on the shoulder of the road. There is no good parking location. This family cemetery is obscured by shrubbery which completely shields it from view until you enter it. The cemetery is neatly mowed. The most recent burial was in 2001, however, substantial residential development in the immediate area makes it questionable that there will be continued use of this cemetery although there is sufficient space for more graves. The owner of record is a member of the Matthews family. The cemetery contains .22 acres. This is the second of 2 Matthew family cemeteries found on SR. 1010, about .6 miles apart. Both contain members of the same family. The Matthew family has been in Wake County at least 150 years and had large land holdings adjoining the cemeteries as well as in Apex and Raleigh. They farmed and W.C. Matthews made and sold shingles. The "Old Home Place", (with shingles made by Matthews), still stands across the road from this cemetery.
