Wake County, NC - Morris Cemetery ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3:33 PM 4/19/2004 Morris Cemetery, 9705 Chapel Hill Rd. (Hwy. 54) Morrisville, Cedar Fork Twp, Wake Co., NC Coordinates: N 35°48'24.5" W 78°49'22.6" I walked the cemetery and recorded from the existing tombstones Directions: From the intersection of the Cary Parkway and Hwy. 54, Cary, take Hwy. 54 (Chapel Hill Rd.) 3/10 mi. NW (towards Chapel Hill) to a logging road on the left side of the road. (N 35°48'32.5" W 78°48'58")just past the gated entrance at 9705 Chapel Hill Rd. There is a place to pull into and park. From that point it is about 1 1/2 miles on foot through a wooded area to the cemetery. Go 3/10 mi. on the logging road to a bike path (N 35°48'22.7" W 78°49'14.1) on the right side of the road. The path generally follows a stream. Pick up the next path at (N 35°48'20 W 78°49'16"). Cross a little stream over some rocks and continue on the path. By this time you will be parallel with the railroad tracks. When you get close to the cemetery coordinates, the cemetery will be about 200 feet from the tracks on a little rise to your right, the railroad tracks will be on your left. There are little red flags along the path. This property is privately owned, but access has not been limited and there are a number of trails that have been used by the public for many years. This cemetery was made known to me by Bob Morris, who sent me the coordinates of the cemetery which he found while out on his bike. He is not related to this family. It is rather overgrown and several tombstones are broken. There are probably more graves here that are not marked. This is an abandoned cemetery hidden in a large undeveloped wooded tract. It is in a piece of land surrounded by industrial and commercial development. I would characterize it as endangered, and perhaps putting it on record will help preserve it. The area is rough and it is easy to trip over roots and rocks, so anyone visiting should dress appropriately, wear long pants and sturdy shoes. There appear to have been soil samples taken and other indications of development plans in the area near the cemetery.
