Wake County, NC - Oberlin Cemetery Oberlin Cemetery 1014 Oberlin Rd. Raleigh, Wake Co., NC 27605 10 Feb 2008 N 35° 47’ 47” W 78° 39’ 31” Directions: From the intersection of Hillsborough St. (SR 3007) & Oberlin Rd., Raleigh: Go 8/10 mile north on Oberlin Rd. to a right turn into the parking lot of the "Y" and park behind the building. That is where the entrance to the cemetery is located. Wake County RE lists the owner of this cemetery as Oberlin Cemetery, containing 2.93 acres. Although the cemetery appears abandoned there have been burials as recent as 2002. This African American Cemetery has fallen into disrepair with many unmarked and sunken graves. Many headstones have been tipped and are broken. Overgrown, and carpeted with fallen leaves, large trees shading the random headstones, it is an anomaly in this busy neighborhood. The cemetery is a relic of a proud past when Oberlin Village was home to a flourishing African American community founded after the Civil War. Over the years it has changed into a congested part of Raleigh, with a shopping center, multiple businesses, and condominiums, surrounding and overwhelming the old cemetery. The area is now thought of as Cameron Village which is actually the name of a nearby shopping center. A few of the original homes remain but Oberlin Village is just a memory except for the cemetery. Walking through the cemetery must be done with care because of the sunken graves hidden beneath leaves. There are some fine headstones as well as remnants of unreadable wooden markers. One area has numerous Funeral Home markers which are no longer readable. Listed below are just a remnant of all who were buried in the Oberlin Cemetery. Wooden grave markers are long decayed, many unreadable FH markers, and numerous rough stones marking graves can not provide data. An abundance of sunken graves make traversing the cemetery risky. Fallen trees are piled in a section of the cemetery and add to the impression of gross neglect. All headstones and markers that could be read were recorded and photographed.
