Wake County, NC - Cemeteries File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Shirley Olson CEMETERY: RAND RECORDED BY: Shirley and Gordon Olson LOCATION: Ten-ten Rd., (1010), at the intersection of Rand Rd, Garner, Wake Co., NC DIRECTIONS: From Raleigh: South on Hwy. 401 to 1010, turn left and stay on 1010 for several miles, crossing Old Stage Rd., and passing Holland Church. Continue until you see two small country stores on the left, one with "Pollard" on the sign. You are now at 1010 and Rand Rd., and on the right is a small cemetery, at the entrance to a newly created subdivision "Rand Meadows". CONDITION: The cemetery lay hidden under weeds until the subdivision began to clear the land. It is now clearly visible, surrounded, at least the part with monuments, by orange tape, and stakes delineating the burial ground and some of the graves. All of the monuments are laying flat on the ground, some bases and monuments are intact, some are broken. The cemetery is included in Lot #1. It appears to be in serious danger and in need of restoration and a fence to protect it. Behind the roped off area there are sunken spots that indicate unmarked graves. The visible cemetery is laid out in two rows. Facing the cemetery from 1010, counting from front to rear on the left: 1. ELIZABETH W. CROWDER, died December 21, 1853, age 64 years "Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" 2. On the right starting from the front (nearest to 1010) 7. FIRST grave is unmarked. There is a wooden stake #182. To it's right, about 4 feet, is stake #252, which appears to note another unmarked grave OUTSIDE the orange tape which attempts to delineate the cemetery. Near the second stake is a third stake marked "Begin #9". There are at least 2 or 3 unmarked graves. 8. ELIZABETH MYATT, born January 29, 1792, died May 27, 1876 Stone is broken in 2 pieces "Hold me up and I shall be????" "Erected by her sons JOHN & ISAAC 9. RIGHT NEXT TO THE CEMETERY is a stake marked LOT #1 on the front; Stake #126 is marked CEMETERY and LOT #1, which implies that LOT #1 includes the CEMETERY. At the rear of the CEMETERY is a stake marked LOT #1 and CEMETERY. Beyond the tape enclosed CEMETERY there are the tell tale sunken areas that suggest other unmarked graves outside the orange taped area. This cemetery is called RAND on the map, and no monument remaining shows that name, further suggesting that there may be other graves in the area. _________________________________________________________________________ USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
