1785  Incomplete state census, returns straggled in 1785-1787; no
      return for Wake County

1790  First census, counted heads of families, 6 columns

1800  Introduced greater age distinctions

1810  Census missing, use tax lists

1820  Census missing, use tax lists; 1825 tax list in Wake County
      includes the unique column, "persons that the land adjoins"

1830  First census the government supplied printed form used by
      census taker

1840  Included names/ages of Revolutionary War pensioners (online
      list for Wake County)

1850  First census to enumerate families by name, slave schedule
      now separate (now online)

1860  Varied slightly from prior census

1870  African Americans named for the first time

1880  Introduced relationship to head of family and marital status

1890  Destroyed by fire, special 1890 Union veterans scheduled survived

1900  Birth month, date, years married, children born to mother,
      number still alive

1910  Civil War survivors; illegibility problem, after filming the
      schedules were destroyed

1920  Persons temporarily absent were enumerated either with household
      or on last pages of district schedule; always check those pages
      for possible additions
