Oct. 6, 1808 WILLIAM HUBBARD TRIAL The Superior Court for Wake County was opened on Monday last by JUDGE BAKER. On Tuesday came on trial of WM. HUBBARD for killing THOMAS COLE. The circumstances are these: On Sunday week COLE and his wife were at HUBBARD'S, (the latter being married to COLE'S sister), on a visit. After drinking of brandy, freely, some dispute arose between COLE and his sister, MRS. HUBBARD, when he threatened to whip her and her husband, and finally attempted to strike the latter from a bench. HUBBARD, at this time being at dinner and having a knife in his hand, in resisting the attempts of COLE, cut him in the arm. The wound, being deep, bled freely, and before it was finally stopped, he had lost so much blood on the occasion his death. The jury acquitted HUBBARD, who it is represented, acting with great forbearance and just before the accident, attempted to reconcile COLE by pressing him to take dinner.
