COL. STOKES had one of his legs shattered, and amputation was necessary. Soon after this mortification set in, and all efforts to save his life were unavailing. COLONEL STOKES was a son of GENERAL MONTFORD STOKES, who was at one time Governor of this State and a member of the United States Senate. He had been in the war from its commencement. He possessed considerable military knowledge, and had seen service before this war, having been Major of the regiment from this State in the war with Mexico. He was a good officer and a worthy man, and his death will be deplored by our people generally.
